The mobile gaming population has, for the first time, overtaken the one that plays on dedicated gaming consoles. Consumer market research company NPD has brought forth this revealing insight in its report titled ?Gamer Segmentation 2012: See the Face of Gaming?.
After years of sustained growth, the video game industry is now feeling the pinch as people are gradually shifting their game play from video game consoles to portable mobile phones. As for pure statistics, in the US alone, the gamer population is 211.5 Million. Though this number may be very high, it has in fact dropped more than 5% since last year. These 12 Million drop-puts must have opted to use mobile phones are the primary entertainment center.
We tried to analyze the reasons:
Size Matters: Though video-game consoles have shrunken, they are still large in comparison to the smartphones. Owing to their weight & size, these simply cannot be lugged around. Additionally, gaming consoles require added accessories like game-pads, motion-sensing equipment and of course a television screen. Smartphones can be simply whipped out of a pocket for an instant gaming session.
Processing Power & Technology: Smartphones are not only getting smarter?and?powerful,?in terms of raw processing power. From streaming movies to multi-player technology, there is hardly anything that cannot be done using a smartphone these days. Not to mention a gaming session can be instantly paused to get some work done. After all even productivity suites that once were the domain of desktop PCs are now available on a smartphone.
Options & Pricing: Prices of gaming consoles may have fallen. However, the other costs of purchasing games still continues to be high. In case of smartphones, the games are attractively priced. Given the huge price gap, it is obvious, gamers will choose smartphone based games, which are now technically & visually at par their video game counterparts.
