California lawmaker calls for Florida boycott

A California lawmaker Wednesday said he will introduce legislation calling for a Florida boycott and a repeal of that state's "stand-your-ground" law.

A California lawmaker wants to boycott Florida after jurors in that state recently found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of black teenager Travyon Martin.

Assemblymember Chris Holden a Democrat from Pasadena, said he will introduce a resolution with the support of the California Legislative Black Caucus calling for a Florida boycott and a repeal of that state?s ?stand-your-ground? law.

Holden, who is African-American, believes Florida?s economy should suffer until that state makes clear steps toward protecting civil rights.

?By boycotting Florida tourism, conventions, and conferences we send a clear message that the death of an unarmed black teenager cannot be tolerated,? he said.

Holden also wants the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate civil rights charges against Zimmerman, who was acquitted last weekend of second-degree murder and manslaughter after he claimed self-defense in shooting Martin during a scuffle last year. The trial lasted just over one month and ended July 13 when six jurors found Zimmerman not guilty.
