Black Friday may be America's biggest shopping day of the year, but Small Business Saturday is also gaining momentum among the masses.

In its second year running, the Small Business Saturday's Official Facebook page attracted over 2.6 million likes, up from 1.2 million in 2010.

Nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is the day on which American Express offers its card members a $25 credit for any $25 or more spent at qualifying small businesses nationwide.

The shop small movement received an extra boost thanks to Occupy Wall Street's outrage over Black Friday, calling for consumers to boycott chain stores in favor of shopping at small business owned stores. In addition to forming Occupy Black Friday and Don't Occupy Walmart, several OWS chapters also organized protesters across the country the day after Thanksgiving.

Tendulkar weighed down by heaviest of milestones (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Sachin Tendulkar stood on the brink of batting immortality only to retreat, plunging a milestone-obsessed country into depression and triggering a debate on his vulnerability against the pressure of expectation.

Six runs shy of a record 100th international century, Tendulkar's usually impeccable shot selection deserted him on a placid pitch at his home Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

The 32,000-seat venue sported a forlorn and empty expression on the first two days of the third West Indies test as the tourists piled up 590 runs, but the ground became more densely populated on Thursday before it was packed to the brim on Friday morning in anticipation of the milestone.

Tendulkar whetted the Mumbai faithful's appetite too, upper-cutting Fidel Edwards for a six to waltz into the 90s but the landmark century was to elude him yet again.

Paceman Ravi Rampaul banged in a short and wide delivery, hardly the deadliest ball Tendulkar has faced in his two-decade-plus career. Trying to punch it, Tendulkar opened the face of the blade and edged it into the welcoming hands of skipper Darren Sammy at second slip.

A short groan echoed around the stadium before being replaced by an eerie silence as Tendulkar hung his head, sighed and trudged back to the pavilion.

Many believe it was pressure, and not Rampaul, which accounted for the 38-year-old 'Little Master'.

After all, this was the second time he fell in the 90s since scoring his 99th international century in a 50-over World Cup match against South Africa in March.

Since then, Tendulkar has hit six half-centuries -- two in one-dayers and four in tests -- but has been unable to add to his 51 test and 48 one-day centuries.

Twice previously he came close but fell leg before on both occasions.

Tendulkar, who has scored more than 33,000 international runs since his 1989 debut in Pakistan, was nine short of the 100-mark in the Oval test in August when he tried to play across the line and was dismissed by Tim Bresnan.

In the second innings of the Delhi test against West Indies earlier this month, Tendulkar, batting fluently on 76, attempted a pull shot and was dismissed by a skidding Devendra Bishoo delivery that caught him plumb in front of wicket.

Six fifties in 16 innings since his 99th international century notwithstanding, there is a growing feeling that Tendulkar is finally showing signs of a pressure many thought he was immune to for a majority of his career.

BOGGED DOWN

Former team mate Sanjay Manjrekar wants Tendulkar, who has grown selective with his one-day international participation, to play and get the century in one of the five ODIs against West Indies before India travels to Australia.

"India wants Tendulkar relaxed and confident (in Australia). He should play the one dayers, get that monkey off his back and go to Australia with a free mind," Manjrekar told Neo Cricket channel.

"(Rahul) Dravid and Tendulkar will be key for India in those conditions against Australia."

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni does not buy into the theory that the milestone has bogged down a batsman used to shouldering the expectation of a cricket-crazy country of 1.2 billion.

"If you are talking about the gentleman, the expectation has always been the size of Everest," Dhoni recently said in Delhi.

"Whatever he has done so far... right from the first two years of his career, he has been a star.

"If he comes onto the field and does not score 50, people think he has not scored. It's something he deals with each and every day.

"Any individual who comes close to any milestone... somehow it takes more time than usual. I think it's just round the corner. We just need to wait."

Tendulkar himself has dismissed the hype, terming his 100th international century as "just a number".

The fans, however, feel otherwise.

Many of them had no hesitation in praying, in vain, for India to follow-on against West Indies so that Tendulkar had another shot at the milestone on a batting paradise of a pitch.

Gun issue represents tough politics for Obama (AP)

WASHINGTON ? They are fuzzy about some issues but the Republican presidential candidates leave little doubt about where they stand on gun rights.

Rick Perry and Rick Santorum go pheasant hunting and give interviews before heading out. Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain speak to the National Rifle Association convention. Michele Bachmann tells People magazine she wants to teach her daughters how to shoot because women need to be able to protect themselves. Mitt Romney, after backing some gun control measures in Massachusetts, now presents himself as a strong Second Amendment supporter.

President Barack Obama, on the other hand, is virtually silent on the issue.

He has hardly addressed it since a couple months after the January assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., when he promised to develop new steps on gun safety in response. He still has failed to do so, even as Tucson survivors came to Capitol Hill last week to push for action to close loopholes in the background check system.

Democrats have learned the hard way that embracing gun control can be terrible politics, and the 2012 presidential election is shaping up to underscore just how delicate the issue can be. With the election likely to be decided largely by states where hunting is a popular pastime, like Missouri, Ohio or Pennsylvania, candidates of both parties want to win over gun owners, not alienate them.

For Republicans, that means emphasizing their pro-gun credentials. But for Obama and the Democrats, the approach is trickier.

Obama's history in support of strict gun control measures prior to becoming president makes it difficult for him to claim he's a Second Amendment champion, even though he signed a bill allowing people to take loaded guns into national parks. At the same time, he's apparently decided that his record backing gun safety is nothing to boast of, either, perhaps because of the power of the gun lobby and their opposition to anything smacking of gun control.

The result is that while Republicans are more than happy to talk up their support for gun rights, Obama may barely be heard from on the issue at all.

"Gun control is a fight that the administration is not willing to pick. They're not likely to win it," said Harry Wilson, author of a book on gun politics and director of the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research at Roanoke College in Virginia. "They certainly would not win it in Congress, and it's not likely to be a winner at the polls. ... It comes down to one pretty simple word: Politics."

Administration officials say they are working to develop the gun safety measures promised after the Giffords shooting, and they say have taken steps to improve the background check system. White House spokesman Matt Lehrich says the White House goal is to "protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens while keeping guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them under existing law."

But when it comes to guns and politics, Democrats haven't forgotten what happened in 1994. That year, President Bill Clinton was pushing for passage of a landmark crime bill featuring a ban on assault weapons, and then-House Speaker Thomas Foley, D-Wash., twisted Democrats' arms to get it through the House. Come November, Democrats suffered widespread election losses and lost control of the House and the Senate. Foley was among those defeated, and Clinton and others credited the NRA's campaigning with a big role in the outcome. And when the assault weapons ban came up for congressional reauthorization in 2004, it failed.

Given that history, the NRA expects to see Obama treading carefully on guns through 2012.

"It's bad politics to be on the wrong side of the Second Amendment at election time," said Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president. "They're trying to fog the issue through the 2012 election and deceive gun owners into thinking he's something he's not, which is pro-Second Amendment."

For gun control advocates, it adds up to frustration with Obama and the Democrats. The group Mayors Against Illegal Guns argues that polling shows voters support certain gun safety measures like stronger background checks ? although a recent Gallup poll also finds more support for enforcing current laws than for passing new ones.

"Good policy here is good politics," said John Feinblatt, an adviser to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is a co-chair of the mayors' group. "Unfortunately, for too long the administration has bought the conventional wisdom" that gun control is bad politics.

But the NRA outspends gun-control groups by wide margins, and analysts say that when it comes time to vote, the gun issue is more likely to motivate gun rights activists than gun control supporters.

Since becoming president, Obama has been extremely cautious on the issue. In his 2004 Senate race, for example, Obama said it was a "scandal" that then-President George W. Bush didn't force renewal of the assault weapons ban. But Obama himself has done nothing to promote that issue since becoming president.

Obama's commitment to act on gun safety may also be complicated by an unrelated controversy over a Justice Department program aimed at stanching gun trafficking into Mexico. The government lost track of numerous weapons in connection with the program.

Obama has vowed to figure out what went wrong with the operation and make sure it's corrected, but with Republicans seizing on the issue to attack the White House, the politics around taking action on guns hasn't gotten any easier.

So for now, supporters who hoped to see Obama adopt a stronger stance on guns and act in the wake of the Giffords shooting look like they're going to be disappointed. "We haven't given up hope," said Dennis Henigan, acting president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, "but our impatience is growing with each passing day."

Burkhead's 160 yds lead No. 22 Neb past Iowa 20-7 (AP)

LINCOLN, Neb. ? Rex Burkhead, who started the week with his right foot in a walking boot, ran for 160 yards and a touchdown on a school-record 38 carries and No. 22 Nebraska defeated Iowa 20-7 on Friday.

Burkhead pounded away at Iowa's defense 4 or 5 yards at a time and looked like his old self after being held to a season-low 36 yards in last week's loss at Michigan.

He had eight carries for 39 yards on a 10-play drive that ended with his 2-yard run and a 20-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Burkhead ran on nine of 15 plays of an 80-yard drive that produced the Huskers' first touchdown. His 2-yard run around right end converted a fourth-and-1 inside the Iowa 30, and six plays later Kyler Reed scored his first touchdown of the season on a 6-yard pass from Taylor Martinez.

Nebraska's coaching staff got Burkhead a record 38th carry on the second-to-last play of the game when the Huskers (9-3, 5-3) were in victory formation. Burkhead took a knee for a 3-yard loss.

Burkhead came out of the 45-17 loss at Michigan banged up, and he was limited in practice all week.

He started and finished strong, breaking a 14-yard run on the Huskers' first play from scrimmage and then going for 8 and 6 yards. Ameer Abdullah spelled him, but never for more than two consecutive plays.

Nebraska is hoping to land a berth in the Capital One Bowl, if two Big Ten teams are invited to BCS games, or the Outback Bowl. Iowa (7-5, 4-4) could slip to the Meineke Car Care Bowl or TicketCity Bowl.

The Hawkeyes avoided getting shut out for the first time in 11 years when Marcus Coker scored on a 2-yard run with 3:26 left.

With Nebraska having joined the Big Ten this year, Friday's game was long touted as the start of a natural rivalry. Iowa is Nebraska's closest Big Ten opponent, and the farm states split by the Missouri River share a passion for football.

The universities further billed it as the inaugural "Heroes Game" and honored "citizen heroes" from each state at halftime.

What happened on the field bore little resemblance to those big Thanksgiving week games Nebraska used to play against Oklahoma and Colorado.

The Huskers and Hawkeyes were meeting for the first time since 2000, and Nebraska leads the series 27-12-3.

Martinez was 12 of 22 for 163 yards, and Kenny Bell caught five balls for a season-high 93 yards.

Cornerback Alfonzo Dennard shut down Marvin McNutt, holding Iowa's record-setting receiver to two catches for 1 yard through three quarters. McNutt finished with four catches for 29 yards.

Coker, averaging 118 yards a game, ran 18 times for 87 yards.

Scientific tales come alive in ink

Used with permission from "Science Ink" by Carl Zimmer. Sterling Publishing (c) 2011

MRL, a graduate student in molecular biology at Princeton, wears universal truths on his chest, including the structure of a glucose molecule, a symbol from quantum physics, the golden ratio and a carbon atom. The tattoo is one of the featured images in "Science Ink" by Carl Zimmer.

By Alan Boyle

Ready to crack open some inky tales of scientific lore and levity? Check out our holiday science book roundup ? and add your own selections to the list.

Big, arty books:

  • "Science Ink: Tattoos of the Science Obsessed" by Carl Zimmer: This is not your?typical coffee-table book. First,?it's handy enough to sit on a shelf, thanks to its 7-by-10-inch size. But more importantly, it's not just an assemblage of 200 amazing tattoos inspired by scientific symbology. Zimmer tells the tale behind each tattoo ... and the science that inspired it. Think of it as a survey course on the cosmos, written on skin.
  • "The Physics Book: From the Big Bang to Quantum Resurrection, 250 Milestones in the History of Physics," by Clifford Pickover. What other book begins 13.7 billion years in the past and ends up more than 100 trillion years in the future? In between the big bang and the coming reign of the Boltzmann brains, Pickover hits the high points in the history of physics, explains scientific concepts ranging from classical mechanics to dark energy and string theory, and offers a glossy illustration for each milestone. Oh, and don't forget "The Math Book."
  • "The Space Shuttle: Celebrating 30 Years of NASA's First Space Plane," by Piers Bizony. Are you looking for this year's biggest, shiniest coffee-table book about NASA's recently departed space shuttle fleet? Bizony's book is chock-full of pictures from each of the fleet's 135 missions, although the last one is represented only?by a picture of?Atlantis and its team during preparations for July's final flight. The text reviews 30 years of highs and lows for the shuttle program.
  • "The Big Idea: How Breakthroughs of the Past Shape the Future," foreword by Timothy Ferris. National Geographic's coffee-table book provides a visually spectacular look at 24 cutting-edge innovations, ranging from stem cells and nanomedicine to augmented reality. But that's not all: Each of the "big ideas" is traced back through the scientific discoveries of the past that have laid the foundation for the future. Just the thing for a budding scientist or engineer. Here's what Boing Boing's Maggie Koerth-Baker says about the book: "If you put it on your coffee table, it will make people believe that you are smart. But I think its real value lies in what it can do for a seventh-grader."
  • "The Cult of Lego," by John Baichtal and Joe Meno. Not exactly a science book, but if we're talking about inspiring the next generation of engineers, flipping through this book would be one way to do it. You can regard this volume as an introduction to the esoteric world of "vigs" (vignettes), "minifigs" (custom-made mini-figurines), balloon-borne Lego experiments, robo-Legos?and grand projects that?require millions of those little bricks.?

For kids of all ages:
The AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books recognizes high-quality science writing and illustration for young readers, but the "young adult" finalists are worth reading even if you're not so young anymore. My book, "The Case for Pluto," was a finalist last year. Here are this year's top selections:

Young adult science books:

  • "Feathers: The Evolution of a Natural Miracle," by Thor Hanson. Delves into the evolution of feathers in the dinosaur age, their adaptation in the animal world and in the fashion world, the history of the global feather trade and the future applications of feather science.
  • "Feynman," by Jim Ottaviani with illustrations by Leland Myrick. A graphic novel about the bongo-playing, Nobel-winning?pioneer of quantum physics? This is a biography of Richard Feynman you have to see to believe. It's been a good year for the late physicist: Fans will want to pick up Lawrence M. Krauss' "Quantum Man" and take a look at Freeman Dyson's essay about both biographies in The New York Review of Books. Really serious fans will be interested in?the new paperback edition of "Feynman Lectures on Physics."
  • "Plastic: A Toxic Love Story," by Susan Freinkel. Are we in an unhealthy relationship with plastic? Freinkel delves into the history, science and economics surrounding our love affair with synthetics, and suggests a healthier way to live with "the material we love to hate but can't seem to live without."
  • "Science Fair Season: Twelve Kids, a Robot Named Scorch, and What It Takes to Win," by Judy Dutton.?The Intel Science and Engineering Fair is one of the premier?competitions for whiz kids, offering $4 million in prizes and scholarships. But what's the real story behind the whizzery? Dutton follows a dozen brainy contestants through the thrill of discovery and the agony of defeat.

Children's science picture books:

Middle-grades science books:

Award-winners:
These books take the prize. Literally. They're this year's top selections from prestigious science-writing competitions:

Additional attention-getters:
These books have been getting a lot of ink from The New York Times, Amazon.com and other sources:

  • "The Beginning of Infinity: Explanations That Transform the World," by David Deutsch.
  • "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined," by Steven Pinker.
  • "Cleopatra: A Life," by Stacy Schiff.
  • "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer," by Siddhartha Mukherjee.
  • "1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created," by Charles C. Mann.
  • "The Information: A History. A Theory. A Flood," by James Gleick.
  • "Is That a Fish in Your Ear? Translation and the Meaning of Everything," by David Bellos.
  • "Here's Looking at Euclid," by Alex Bellos.
  • "Knocking on Heaven's Door: How Physics and Scientific Thinking Illuminate the Universe and the Modern World," by Lisa Randall.
  • "Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea and of the Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists and Fools, Including the Author, Who Went in Search of Them," by Donovan Hohn.
  • "Radioactivity: A History of a Mysterious Science," by Marjorie Caroline Malley.

Brazil suspends Chevron's drilling permission (AP)

SAO PAULO ? Chevron was banned from drilling for oil in Brazil until an investigation into an offshore oil leak at one of the U.S.-based oil company's well sites is completed, regulators said Wednesday.

The board of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency met and "ordered the suspension of drilling activities" until it can identify the causes and who is responsible for the leak of more than 110,000 gallons of oil into the Atlantic ocean off the nation's southeastern coast.

"This resolution suspends all drilling activity for Chevron Brasil Ltda. in national territory," the statement read.

It was not clear how long the suspension would last.

Chevron said in an emailed statement that it would "follow all the rules and regulations of the Government of Brazil and its agencies."

Oil started leaking at the site of a Chevron appraisal well on Nov. 7, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) off the northeastern coast of Rio de Janeiro state.

The agency said on Tuesday that the leak was now "under control."

The work at the Frade field where the leak took place is one of Chevron's "biggest capital investments," according to the company's website, though details are not provided.

George Buck, chief operating officer for Chevron's Brazilian division, has said the spill occurred because Chevron underestimated the pressure in an underwater reservoir.

He said earlier this week that this caused crude oil to rush up a bore hole and eventually escaped into the surrounding seabed. The oil has leaked through at least seven narrow fissures on the ocean floor, all within 160 feet (50 meters) of the wellhead.

The leak is a test for Brazil as huge offshore oil finds have been announced recently, with estimates that they could hold at least 50 billion barrels of oil.

Brazil's Environment Ministry has fined Chevron nearly $28 million, but has said the company could face five or six times that in future penalties. Chevron has not indicated if it will contest the fine in court, which it can do under Brazilian law.

The company came under withering criticism from officials at the ministry and also the regulatory agency for not fully sharing information about the spill in its early days, and of not having the proper emergency equipment on hand to deal with the spill.

Chevron Corp. officials have accepted responsibility for the spill but adamantly reject those accusations.

The oil slick on the ocean surface that resulted from the leak has significantly declined, officials said, dropping to less than 0.78 square miles (2 square kilometers).

George Buck, chief operating officer for Chevron's Brazilian division, appeared before the lower house of Brazil's Congress on Wednesday. He repeated that the company takes full responsibility and he apologized to the Brazilian government and nation.

Carlos Minc, the environment minister for Rio de Janeiro state, has harshly criticized Chevron, telling foreign reporters in Rio that Brazil's laws "allow foreign companies to explore in our waters, we welcome anyone as long as they respect our laws."

"But we are also not a banana republic. If a company violates Brazilian law and the concession terms ... they should go to jail and lose all their exploration rights. We want to be treated with the dignity we deserve as the world's seventh-largest economy."

Feds say Mass. mobster Bulger's girlfriend lied (AP)

BOSTON ? Federal prosecutors say the girlfriend of former Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (BUHL'-jur) should not be released on bail because she lied about her wealth, including a secret bank account "with a substantial balance."

Catherine Greig (grehg) is charged with conspiracy to harbor a fugitive by helping Bulger evade capture for more than 16 years. Bulger is accused of participating in 19 murders. They were caught in Santa Monica, Calif., in June. They have pleaded not guilty.

On Nov. 4, a judge said Greig had shown a willingness to leave home and family when she fled with Bulger in 1995.

Prosecutors argue in court documents filed Tuesday that Greig has failed to provide a sworn statement showing her wealth, preventing court officials from determining a forfeiture amount that would assure she meets bail conditions.

Black Eyed Peas taking a break, deny breaking up (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The Black Eyed Peas have denied rumors that they are breaking up but say they are taking a break from making music together for a while.

"We are not breaking up," band member Taboo told Reuters on Monday at a launch party for their video dance game, "The Black Eyed Peas Experience."

"We're going to take a little vacation and focus on our personal things," added Apl.de.ap, real name Allan Lindo, Jr. who will be focusing on his duties as ambassador for education in the Philippines.

Will.i.am told TV chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, in an interview to be aired on Wednesday, that the band "always have two cycles of records and then we take a break."

"When we take breaks you know, we work on side projects and get our personal stuff in order to then come back and make beautiful music," added the rapper.

The band will play their final concert before the break in Miami on Wednesday and will feature Marc Antony, Cee Lo Green, Flo Rida, Sean Kingston and Jason Derulo.

The four band members have all ventured into solo projects in addition to their music, including fragrance and shoe collections, acting, and philanthropic causes, which they will be focusing on during their hiatus.

Their video dance game on the Xbox 360 Kinect and Wii consoles allows gamers to learn the Black Eyed Peas choreography while seeing their progress captured on screen.

"I want them to get the excitement of actually having the Black Eyed Peas in their own living room," said Taboo.

The game is also a good workout regime. "We have childhood obesity, so it's a good way for people to work out while having fun," said singer Fergie.

Ravens hold off Bengals, take over first place

Flacco throws 2 TD passes, Baltimore defense stymies Cincy at 7-yard line to end it

Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin dives into the end zone for a touchdown in the second quarter.

BALTIMORE - Playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis for the first time in 58 games, the Baltimore Ravens turned to their offense in an important AFC North showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Joe Flacco and Torrey Smith did their part, and with help from a favorable replay call, the Ravens squeezed out a 31-24 victory Sunday.

Flacco threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, Smith had six catches for 165 yards, and Baltimore (7-3) moved into first place in the AFC North with a nerve-racking victory.

Lewis watched from the sideline after being placed on the inactive list with a toe injury. The Ravens' spiritual leader and leading tackler watched his unit turn in a game-saving goal-line stand in the final minute.

Down 31-24, Cincinnati reached the Baltimore 7 before Terrell Suggs collared rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, who was called for intentional grounding. On fourth down, Dalton was sacked by Pernell McPhee.

The Bengals (6-4) needed seven points because on the previous series, an apparent 9-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Jermaine Gresham was overturned by a replay that determined the receiver didn't hold onto the ball at the end of a juggling catch. The Bengals settled for a field goal with 5:32 remaining.

Baltimore is locked in a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the AFC North, but the Ravens own the tiebreaker by virtue of their two wins over the Steelers.

Dalton went 24 for 45 for 373 yards and a touchdown, but he was intercepted three times. Cincinnati was without standout rookie wide receiver A.J. Green, who hurt his right knee a week earlier in a loss to Pittsburgh.

Baltimore took a 24-14 lead on a 2-yard run by Ray Rice late in the third quarter. The score came after Ravens rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith picked off a pass and returned it 16 yards before fumbling. The loose ball was recovered at the Bengals 2 by teammate Brendon Ayanbadejo in a pile that included referee Ron Winter.

Cincinnati's next possession ended with an interception by Lardarius Webb. On the next play, Torrey Smith split the Bengals' two-deep zone and caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to make it 31-14 early in the fourth quarter.

The Bengals responded with a five-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 49-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Andre Caldwell, who slipped behind Jimmy Smith down the right sideline.

But the Ravens held on. Rice finished with 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Flacco completed 17 of 27 passes.

The Bengals punted six times in the first half, two short of their season high for an entire game. Cincinnati's offense managed only 143 yards before halftime, 47 of those on one play.

On the Bengals' second possession, wide receiver Andrew Hawkins made a juggling catch for a 47-yard gain to set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Cedric Benson.

The Ravens didn't get past midfield until early in the second quarter, following a 15-yard punt by Kevin Huber. Starting at its 45, Baltimore picked up a first down before Flacco tossed a short pass to Anquan Boldin, who ran the final 20 yards for a 35-yard touchdown.

Late in the half, Torrey Smith was pulled down by his long dreadlocks at the end of a 28-yard gain. Two plays later, Flacco threw an interception.

UFC 139 postfight: ?Shogun? says fifth could?ve been a 10-8 and wants a rematch against Henderson

UFC 139 postfight: ?Shogun? says fifth could?ve been a 10-8 and wants a rematch against HendersonSAN JOSE, Calif. - Many along press row at the HP Pavilion were a little surprised not one judge gave Mauricio "Shogun" Rua a 10-8 for his efforts in the fifth round of his fight against Dan Henderson. It turns out Rua was surprised as well.

"I don't know how the judges scored the last round. It could have been or should have been a 10-8 round. But that doesn't take anything away from Dan Henderson. He is a legend and those are the type of fights that create a legacy," said Rua.

Rua is looking forward to seeing a replay of the fight.

"I'm going to rest with my family now and take care of myself. Then I'm going to go back and look at the tapes. I want a rematch and I think this would be another great battle and one the fans would definitely want to see," said Rua.

FightMetric backed up Rua. The Brazilian outlanded Henderson 26-0 in significant strikes over the final minutes and 79-8 overall in the fifth.

John Morgan, 2009 MMA Journalist of the Year, scored it a draw as did Adam Hill from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto scored it 48-46 for Rua.

Will Angland at Bleacher Report wrote a strong piece saying Rua was robbed.

(AP) ? Matt Barkley threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns and No. 18 USC held off No. 4 Oregon 38-35 on Saturday night when Alejandro Maldonado missed a 37-yard field goal to tie the game with five seconds left.

Trailing 24-7 in the third quarter, Oregon mounted a furious comeback and narrowed it to 38-35 with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter. Barkley led his team to the Oregon 15, but Marc Tyler fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Ducks with 2:54 to go.

Oregon marched down the field but Maldondado's kick, which was brought five yards closer because of a USC penalty, went wide left.

The loss snaps a 21-game winning streak for the Ducks (9-2, 7-1 Pac-12) at Autzen Stadium, which was the longest in the nation. It also stopped Oregon's winning streak in conference games at 19.

Robert Woods, who was held out of some practices this week with ankle and shoulder injuries, caught seven passes for 53 yards and two scores. With the victory, USC (9-2, 6-2) kept the Ducks from clinching a spot in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game.

The loss had greater implications for Oregon after No. 2 Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State 37-31on Friday night, which is sure to shake up the BCS standings. The Ducks had jumped to fourth in those rankings after a decisive 53-30 victory over then-No. 3 Stanford last week.

But against USC, they were playing catch up from the start.

The Trojans scored first on Barkley's 59-yard touchdown pass to Marqise Lee in the first quarter, then added Barkley's 12-yard scoring pass to Woods early in the second to go up 14-0.

The Ducks didn't' look like themselves until an efficient scoring drive midway through the second quarter. Darron Thomas hit true freshman Colt Lyerla with a 35-yard pass before striking fellow frosh De'Anthony Thomas with a 29-yarder for the touchdown. The seven-play drive covered 88 yards in just 2:15.

But USC answered with Barkley's 4-yard touchdown pass to Woods. The TD, Barkley's 73rd, moved him past Carson Palmer for second on Southern California's career touchdown list. Matt Leinart had 99 for the Trojans.

The Ducks had a chance to narrow it before the half, but De'Anthony Thomas was out of bounds when he pulled down a Darron Thomas pass to the end zone. On the next play, James fumbled and the ball was recovered by USC.

James, who dislocated his elbow earlier in the season and missed two games, was hit in the arm on the play, and was holding the elbow as he was helped up by trainers.

The Trojans opened the second half with Andre Heidari's 26-yard field goal to make it 24-7, but Oregon again showed a flash of its usual speedy offense with a quick drive capped by Kenjon Barner's 10-yard touchdown run.

The Ducks, known for their second half adjustments, couldn't slow USC's momentum and the Trojans scored on the subsequent series with Marc Tyler's 3-yard run. Barkley added a 5-yard scoring pass to Randall Telfer to make it 38-14.

De'Anthony Thomas narrowed it again for the Ducks with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and the Autzen Stadium crowd got back into the game with 3:28 left in the third quarter.

Barner had an 8-yard touchdown run to close the Ducks to within 38-27 with 12:44 left in the game. The Trojans ate a lot of time up with their next series, but Barkley was intercepted by John Boyett, putting the Ducks in business on their own 40. Oregon scored on James' 1-yard run, and the 2-point conversion was ruled good after review to make it 38-35.

Darron Thomas threw for 265 yards and a touchdown for the Ducks. Barner ran for 123 yards and two scores.

But USC still got its first victory in the state of Oregon since 2005.

The Trojans cannot play in the postseason because of NCAA sanctions. The league's southern representative is still up for grabs between Arizona State, Utah and UCLA.

There were cheers before the game started when NBA stars LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony and several others showed up on the sidelines. James and Anthony even tossed around a football.

The players were have been working out at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., just outside of Portland.

Flying over Thanksgiving? Here's what to expect

For Jay Caulk, a travel agent in Pompano Beach, Fla., the Thanksgiving travel season is shaping up like one of those hold-your-breath scenes in the movies where someone inevitably says, ?It?s quiet out there ... too quiet.?

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Mom recycles her way to Italy

A?California mom paid for a ?trip of a lifetime? to Italy for her and her husband using only money she made from recycling cans and plastic.

    2. This Thanksgiving, make room at the inn
    3. Flying with cremated remains
    4. Southwest, TLC team up for reality TV project
    5. Pilot stuck in lavatory sparks security scare

?Usually by now, we have people breaking down the doors to get their air tickets, but I haven?t seen anybody,? said Caulk. ?It?s been blank, really blank.?

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, he?s not the only one wondering what that blank portends for the holiday travel season. From corporate mergers to screening procedures, much has changed since last year and fliers who haven?t been paying attention run the risk of getting shut out.

The high cost of procrastination
Earlier this month, the Airline Transport Association of America (ATA), the trade group for the U.S. airline industry, forecasted that 23.2 million people would fly over the 12-day period between Friday, Nov. 18 and Tuesday, Nov. 29. That represents a 2 percent decline from last year and a 12 percent drop from the peak of 26.2 million set in 2006.

The reasons range from the micro- to the macro-economic. High airfares are clearly giving people pause ? according to Priceline.com, Thanksgiving fares averaged $407 on Nov. 1, up 6 percent from the already high fares of 2010 ? at the same time that high unemployment and declining household worth have squeezed people?s discretionary dollars.

The result is that many potential travelers are delaying their purchases or procrastinating in the hopes of last-minute deals. The problem, says Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, is that we?ve already passed the 21-day advance-purchase mark, so the cheapest fares are already gone.

?The problem with trying to out-game the airlines this year is that they own Park Place,? said Seaney. ?People who procrastinate do so to their own detriment this year.?

Marie Lotode Chandra, founder of ViaHerWorld.com, a website for women business travelers, can relate. Hoping to fly from New York to the Caribbean over Thanksgiving, she and her husband were unable to book flights in advance due to uncertainties in their work schedules. When she finally tried earlier this month, she got quite the surprise.

?Flights to Puerto Rico or Jamaica that would usually be $300?$400 are now $800?$1,000,? she told msnbc.com. ?That?s ridiculous; for that, I can usually fly to France.?

Fewer airlines, fewer options, higher fares
It doesn?t take an advanced degree in yield management to understand why airfares are rising even as fewer people are flying. Prompted by the lessons of the past and stubbornly high fuel prices, the airlines have turned to mergers, schedule cuts and smaller planes to keep the number of seats in line with demand.

Consider capacity cuts. Last year, the top 10 U.S. carriers flew almost 12.4 million seats on 120,000 flights between Nov. 24 and Nov. 29. During the comparable period this year, they are scheduled to fly less than 12 million seats on less than 116,000 flights. That?s a 3 percent drop in seats and a 4 percent drop in flights (all figures from OAG, a UBM Aviation brand).

Not surprisingly, those declines are not distributed equally across the nation?s route system --? second-tier airports are seeing some of the largest cuts. Among the hardest hit, according to OAG: Milwaukee (scheduled flights down 26 percent November 2011 vs. 2010), Memphis (down 21 percent) and Cincinnati (down 18 percent).

Cincinnati, in fact, could be the poster child for large-scale capacity cuts, not to mention a cautionary tale about the impact of mergers. In 2007, when the city was still a hub for Delta, the local airport handled 153,000 departures, according to Department of Transportation (DOT) figures. Last year, two years after the merger between Delta and Northwest closed, it handled less than 73,000.

?It never happens overnight,? said Tom Reich, president of aviation consulting firm Air Service Partners LLC. ?It?s always a few flights here, a few flights there. You do that for a few years in a row and suddenly a bustling hub turns into virtually nothing.?

Other airports are likely to feel similar effects in the coming months. Earlier this year, Delta announced it would cut 25 percent of its current service from Memphis, a former Northwest hub, in 2011. And while it?s too early to tell what impact the Continental/United merger will have on routes and schedules, Cleveland could be in the crosshairs, as well.

?Back when Continental was just Continental, Cleveland was their reliever valve in the Northeast,? said Reich. ?With the merger, it?s equidistant from Washington-Dulles and Chicago-O?Hare so you?ve got double redundancy.?

Whether that means more cuts won?t be known until the two airlines are completely integrated sometime next year. (The same is true regarding any major changes resulting from Southwest?s purchase of AirTran earlier this year.) But specific decisions aside, history suggests the prognosis is for fewer options and higher fares.

Chris Gray, for one, has experienced that scenario firsthand. As an executive with a roller coaster company, he?s been flying from Harrisburg, Penn., to Cincinnati for the holidays for almost a decade. ?At one time, there were eight to 10 flights to Cincinnati out of Harrisburg; now it?s down to, like, four.?

And the fare? ?Every year, they climb 10 to 15 percent,? he told msnbc.com. ?Nine years ago, I paid around $150; this year, it was $375. As a single person, it?s still easy for me to jump on a plane and go but for two or more people, it?s probably cheaper to just drive the nine hours.?

A smoother experience at security?
Given the prognosis for full planes and high fares, there would seem to be little for fliers to smile about during their Thanksgiving travels. And yet, there?s potentially good news from the most unlikely of sources: After years of increasingly frustrating, progressively more invasive screening procedures, there are indications that airport security and common sense don?t have to be mutually exclusive.

?We?ve had a relatively quiet period for a while,? said aviation-safety expert Peter Goelz, senior vice president with O?Neill and Associates and a former director of the National Transportation Safety Board. ?That?s taken TSA out of the glare of the public spotlight so they can move forward on stuff they might not have otherwise.?

For holiday travelers, the most pertinent effort will likely be TSA?s decision to modify screening procedures for children after generating universal outrage over several incidents of pat-downs of preteens, toddlers and, in at least one case, an 8-month-old baby.

Under the new guidelines, children 12 years old and younger will be allowed to keep their shoes on and may be allowed to pass through scanning machines multiple times to resolve anomalies. According to TSA, the new guidelines will reduce, although not completely eliminate, the need for a subsequent pat-down.

Travelers may also be relieved to know that TSA is continuing to install upgraded software in its full-body screening machines in an effort to provide more passenger privacy. Unlike the first-generation software, which provided highly revealing, passenger-specific images ? digital strip-searches to critics ? the new software displays a generic outline and highlights any concealed items.

According to TSA spokesman Greg Soule, approximately 260 of the agency?s more than 510 machines feature the less-revealing software: ?The millimeter-wave machines have received the upgrade and we are now testing the upgrade for our backscatter machines.?

According to Soule, the machines should speed up screening since the displays are on the machines themselves and visible to both TSA agents and passengers. That will eliminate the need for the radio communication required when images are displayed in a separate room and will likely alleviate some, though not all, travelers? concerns over disturbingly graphic images of their bodies.

?This addresses privacy concerns and also adds a level of transparency where the passenger now sees exactly what the officer sees,? said Soule. ?It?s a more efficient process.?

Efficiency is also behind TSA?s PreCheck program, which gives select passengers access to expedited security after they?ve provided background information to the agency prior to traveling. Unfortunately, most Thanksgiving travelers probably won?t see much benefit as it?s only available to a fraction of the traveling public, mostly elite members of Delta and American?s mileage plans and those already enrolled in trusted traveler programs managed by Customs and Border Protection.

Still, it?s a good step toward TSA?s goal of a more risk-based, intelligence-driven approach to airport security. The agency is now working toward expanding the pilot program to include other airlines, such as United, Southwest and JetBlue, and additional, as-yet-unannounced airports.

In the meantime, the new initiatives are indications that TSA is trying to move toward a system based on common sense and away from one that invades people?s privacy, treats all travelers as potential terrorists and alienates large swaths of the traveling public.

?They still have a problem with consistency from one airport to another,? said Goelz. ?At some airports, you have to take off your belt, at some you don?t, but that should be the least of your worries.?

In Canada, hockey for everyone

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

A hockey player who has been diagnosed as legally blind is rollerblading from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Toronto to raise money to teach blind Canadians how to play hockey. Mark DeMontis, who has limited vision, is in-line skating through Canada with two friends who take turns being his guide. He is raising funds through an organization he started called Courage Canada, and is expected to arrive in Toronto on Oct. 15 ? two months after setting off from Halifax.

Mr. DeMontis says he was inspired by Chris Delaney, a blind Canadian who rode a tandem bike across Canada to raise funds for research.

Blind hockey is a sport that so far exists only in Canada. It involves a puck that is much larger, slower, and noisier than a normal puck ? which makes it easier to spot for visually impaired players, according to Fran?ois Beauregard, a captain of a Montreal-based blind hockey team called Les Hiboux de Montreal, or The Montreal Owls. Canada started having national blind hockey tournaments two years ago, but organizers would like to turn it into an international sport. They?ve received e-mails and phone calls from the United States and Sweden expressing interest.

In addition to hockey, there are also bicycling, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiing events for blind people in Canada.

Women's basketball community grieves Budke's death (AP)

Kurt Budke touched the lives of many people in his years as a women's basketball coach. Now they are left trying to come to grips with the Oklahoma State coach's sudden death.

Budke and assistant Miranda Serna were killed when the single-engine plane transporting them on a recruiting trip crashed in steep terrain in Arkansas, the university said Friday.

"The tragedy at Oklahoma State, which has known its share of tragedy in the past, leaves you with a helpless feeling," Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma said. "My heart goes out to the families of Kurt and Miranda and everyone associated with the basketball program and university. The women's college basketball community just lost two family members and all of us are feeling the effects. There won't be a day that goes by this season that we won't think about them in one form or another."

Budke's mentor at Louisiana Tech, Leon Barmore, was on vacation with his family at Disney World when he heard the news.

"It's so unbelievable," Barmore said. "I truly enjoyed being around him. We lost a family man and a great friend. When I retired after 25 years, you don't want just anyone to take your place. I thought Kurt was the right guy to do it."

The 50-year-old Budke went 80-16 in three seasons running the Lady Techsters before taking over at Oklahoma State. Barmore got to know him when Budke was coaching junior college Trinity Valley and he was recruiting future Louisiana Tech star Betty Lennox. Barmore was impressed by Budke's repartee with his players.

"When I first went there and got into the gym, I saw eight players in the outer office hanging around, enjoying themselves and relaxing," he said. "This was a player's coach. The players loved to play for him. He presented an environment which was relaxing. He made you feel warm and at ease ? that always stood out to me."

Lennox was devastated when she heard the news while heading to a Tulsa Shock community event.

"I dropped down into tears. It was very difficult and I had to walk away for a couple minutes. I picked up my phone and tried to call him and that was a mistake," she said. "He definitely taught me several things. One thing that stood out to me was to be who I am. If I won't be who I am, I won't be successful. He taught me to be a go-getter, to believe in myself. I was able to pick up the phone and call him any time of the day and he was there, open, and positive. I will miss him for those type of things, not just on the court."

Budke played basketball for Barton County (Kan.) junior college and graduated from Washburn in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. After some early small-college jobs, he built the JUCO powerhouse at Trinity Valley before hooking up with Louisiana Tech.

UC Santa Barbara coach Carlene Mitchell played for Budke at Trinity Valley and helped him win his first national championship at the school. She stayed in touch with her former coach, who helped her get her first head coaching job this year.

"He was so proud. He put in a ton of calls for me and I remember him yelling and screaming in his country drawl when I told him I got it," a devastated Mitchell said.

Mitchell, who grew up in Arkansas, said that Budke's plane went down a few miles from where her high school coach lived.

"It's a trip I've made many times," Mitchell said. "He used to call me his little Razorback. I'm sick and sad. I don't know the right words right now. His kids and his wife, that was the priority for him."

Budke met his wife, Shelley, when he was an assistant for the men's team at Friends University. She was playing for the women's team at the time. His boss told him he couldn't date her until after her career was over. They have three children, including a daughter who is at Oklahoma State.

"I've known Kurt for many years and enjoyed watching his success all along the way," Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said. "He was a great guy and a wonderful family man. He had such a great passion for teaching and coaching the game of women's basketball."

Budke coached Serna and Trinity Valley to a junior college national title in 1996. Serna went on to play for Houston before returning to the community college to become an assistant coach under Budke. He kept Serna on his staff when he went to Louisiana Tech and Oklahoma State. She was the recruiting coordinator for the Cowgirls.

While Mitchell didn't play with Serna at Trinity Valley, she got to know her through the years on the recruiting trail.

"Miranda was a really great person," Mitchell said. "She worked hard and believed in him. That's why she stayed. She had some opportunities to look at some other jobs, but she wanted to bring in players and help him win at Oklahoma State."

Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said the deaths would have a wide impact.

"There's a bigger picture out there and it's not a basketball game. It puts life in perspective." Mulkey said. "I feel for the Oklahoma State community. How many more tragedies can they endure?"

Mitchell was an assistant coach at Oklahoma State in 2001 when 10 people affiliated with the university's men's basketball team died in a Colorado plane crash.
