Junior dos Santos and Tim Boetsch show off their bruised post UFC-155 faces

Junior dos Santos and Tim Boetsch both walked away from UFC 155 with losses. They also walked away with seriously, seriously beat-up faces, as shown in this picture from the hospital.

UFC president Dana White originally suggested that dos Santos suffered a broken jaw from his five-round, title loss to Cain Velasquez, but tests reportedly came back negative. Boetsch had a huge cut during his loss to Costa Philippou, which is pretty easy to find in the above picture.

China's Controversial Brain Surgery To Cure Drug Addiction

kkleiner writes "A small handful of doctors in China are using a highly controversial procedure to rid people of drug addiction by destroying a part of patients' brains. The procedure involves drilling small holes into the skulls of patients and inserting long electrodes that destroy a part of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. This area, often referred to as the "pleasure center" of the brain, is the major nucleus of the brain's reward circuit. Is it worth being cured of addiction if, losing the addiction, we also lose part of who we are?" The practice has been officially banned, but apparently continues nonetheless.

After release from jail, Urbina returns to baseball

Former All-Star closer Ugueth Urbina has been released from a Venezuelan prison after serving more than 5? years for attempted murder.

Tom Pidgeon/Getty Images

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Former major league pitcher Ugueth Urbina returned to baseball Friday after serving 7? years in prison for the attempted murder of five workers on his family's ranch.

Before taking the field in his native Venezuela to play for the Lions of Caracas, Urbina described himself as "more mature" and said he was "very excited to play baseball again."

"I'm excited to be here," Urbina told reporters at the University Stadium in Caracas, where the Lions played the Zulia Eagles.

The 38-year-old pitcher was released from prison Sunday after serving roughly half of his 14-year sentence for attempted murder during a dispute over a gun on Oct. 16, 2005.

Urbina was found guilty of attacking and injuring workers with a machete. Several other men participated in the attack at his family's ranch, located about 25 miles from Caracas.

Urbina, who pitched for the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, has repeatedly denied involvement with the incident that landed him in prison, saying he was sleeping at the time of the attack.

A two-time All-Star, Urbina saved 237 big league games from 1995-2005. He had two saves in the 2003 World Series to help the Marlins beat the New York Yankees, and last pitched in the majors with the Phillies in 2005.

Urbina told reporters he hopes to play professional baseball in the United States again.

"The first order of business is pitching in Venezuela," he said.

Favi Entertainment SmartStick FE02RF-BL

The Favi Entertainment SmartStick FE02RF-BL ($39.99 list) is a full QWERTY keyboard with an integrated touchpad that's been condensed to the size of a remote control. Thanks to its compact size, it gives users a way to control their home theatre PCs (HTPC) from the comfort of their couch without having to lug around a full-size keyboard and a separate mouse. With its media playback controls, built-in laser pointer, responsive (and backlit) keyboard, and rechargeable battery, there's plenty to like about it. That said, its appeal is undermined by its lack of Bluetooth connectivity and hard-to-reach middle section of the keyboard.

Design and Features
The SmartStick FE02RF-BL's rectangular chassis measures 0.3 by 6.3 by 2.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.8 ounces, making it compact enough to be slipped into your backpack or in between your couch cushions without attracting any attention. It plastic frame sports a black matte finish, so you don't need to worry about all the smudging and fingerprints that often plagues glossy-faced keyboards like the AZiO Wireless RF Multimedia Keyboard with Trackpad (KBP336RP).

The SmartStick FE02RF-BL was designed to be held horizontally in both hands, leaving both of the user's thumbs free to maneuver around the keyboard and touchpad. The top row of the SmartStick FE02RF-BL features volume and media playback controls, and off to the right side is its integrated touchpad. The left- and right-click buttons, meanwhile, are on the left side. Android hot keys (Home, AppMenu, Back, and Search) are beneath the touchpad, though some their functionality is lost on a PC; the Home button launches your web browser, the AppMenu button functions as a right-click, and the Search button opens your operating system's search tool. The keyboards' lower row features a Windows Start button and two function keys that, among other things, turns the Enter button into a Ctrl+Alt+Delete button.

The rounded edges of the SmartStick FE02RF-BL house a few additional features. In addition to the power button on the left side, the front edge sports a trio of buttons designed with presentations in mind, like Page Up and Page Down buttons that can cycle through PowerPoint slides and, most interestingly, a switch that controls the built-in laser pointer located the right side of the unit. Outside of PowerPoint, the Page Up and Page Down buttons can scroll through websites or documents. What you choose to do with the laser pointer, on the other hand, is entirely up to you, though we don't recommend shining it in yours or anyone else's eyes. Unlike the Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901, the SmartStick FE02RF-BL's keyboard is backlit, so users won't have any difficulty typing in the dark.

The underside of the SmartStick FE02RF-BL has a sliding battery compartment that houses its 2.96Wh Li-ion battery, which can be recharged by connecting the unit to your computer via the included USB cable. This compartment also doubles as a storage area for the included USB wireless receiver.

The SmartStick FE02RF-BL is compatible with Windows (Vista/7/8) and Mac OS X. In Windows 8, the SmartStick Wireless Keyboard's Start button lets you switch between the Start screen and traditional desktop mode. If you're looking for something that features Windows 8-specific function keys, though, the Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard offers significantly more functionality in that arena.

Performance
No software is needed to use the SmartStick FE02RF-BL, so setting it up requires little beyond plugging in the USB receiver and waiting several moments while the driver is automatically installed. The receiver transmits over a 2.4GHz wireless frequency, and I experience no latency or lag during use. That said, the absence of Bluetooth connectivity limits the usability of the SmartStick FE02RF-BL, especially for tablet users or those with limited available USB ports. It's also a puzzling omission given the inclusion of Android-specific hotkeys. At any rate, users looking to avoid wireless receivers altogether should check out either the Bluetooth-compatible Wedge Mobile Keyboard or, even better, the Logitech diNovo Mini, which offers both USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

During use, the SmartStick FE02RF-BL's dual-thumb operation felt right at home for anyone who has ever composed a text message on a cell phone. At any rate, the keys offer a comfortable typing feel and a good amount of resistance. However, since the SmartStick FE02RF-BL was designed to be held rather than placed on a flat surface, reaching the middle of the keyboard with one's thumbs is nearly impossible. In order to do so, I needed to slide one of my hands closer to the unit's center, which compromised my thumbs' ability to readily access the touchpad or left- and right- click buttons. For a device whose primary function is typing, this is a considerable design flaw. The touchpad, on the other hand, was responsive and accurate thanks to its slightly textured surface. For users who prefer something other than a touchpad, the Lenovo Mini N5901's trackball is a good alternative.

The Favi Entertainment SmartStick FE02RF-BL ($39.99 list) is a decent compact keyboard that gives users a way to control their home theatre PCs (HTPC) from the comfort of their couch. All said, however, its appeal is undermined by its lack of Bluetooth connectivity and, more significantly, its keyboard's hard-to-reach middle section. For these reasons, the Logitech diNovo Mini continues to retain its Editors' Choice for home entertainment keyboards. Still, the SmartStick FE02RF-BL remains a good choice with plenty of good going for it.

Congress extends foreign surveillance law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate gave final congressional approval Friday to a bill renewing the government's authority to monitor overseas phone calls and emails of suspected foreign spies and terrorists ? but not Americans ?without obtaining a court order for each intercept.

The classified Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act program was on the brink of expiring by year's end. The 73-23 vote sent the bill to a supportive President Barack Obama, whose signature would keep the warrantless intercept program in operation for another five years.

The Senate majority rejected arguments from an unusual combination of Democratic liberals and ideological Republican conservatives, who sought to amend the bill to require the government to reveal statistics showing whether any Americans were swept up in the foreign intercepts. The attempt lost, with 52 votes against and 43 in favor.

The Obama administration's intelligence community and leaders of the Senate's intelligence committee said the information should be classified and opposed the disclosure, repeating that it is illegal to target Americans without an order from a special U.S. surveillance court.

The group seeking more disclosures also sought ? unsuccessfully ? a determination by the government of whether any intelligence agency attempted to use information gained from foreigners to search for information on Americans without a warrant, referred to as "back-door" searches. The prohibition against targeting Americans without a warrant protects Americans wherever they are, in the United States or somewhere else.

The debate focused on the need to balance national security with civil liberties. Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., the chairwoman and top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned that the classified intercept program would be jeopardized if even statistical information was disclosed. They sparred repeatedly with Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who held the bill up for months until he was allowed to argue on the Senate floor that Americans' civil liberties were in danger under the law.

During debate that began Thursday, Feinstein bluntly told Wyden, a fellow liberal, that she opposed his disclosure amendment because, "I know where this goes. Where it goes is to destroy the program."

Wyden insisted his group was interested only in making public estimates that already existed. In insisting on information about whether the foreign intercepts led to warrantless "back door" searches of Americans, the senator said there already had been one instance of such a violation.

He said the finding of a violation, details of which remain classified, "demonstrates the impact of the law on Americans' privacy has been real and is not hypothetical."

"How many phone calls to and from Americans have been swept up in this authority?" he asked.

A member of the intelligence committee, Wyden argued he was trying to "strike a balance between security and liberty" and that "the 300 million Americans who expect us to strike that balance ... are in the dark."

When Americans are targeted for surveillance, the government must get a warrant from a special 11-judge court of U.S. district judges appointed by the Supreme Court. In contrast, when foreigners abroad are targeted, the surveillance court approves annual certifications submitted by the attorney general and the director of national Intelligence that identify certain categories of foreign intelligence targets.

The Obama administration has called the secret intercepts "invaluable to the U.S. government's efforts to detect and prevent threats to America and its allies, while providing robust protections for the civil liberties and privacy of U.S. persons." It said if Congress had failed to extend the program, there would have been "a significant loss of intelligence" that would have impeded the ability to respond quickly to new threats.

The House in September approved the same five-year extension of the law by a vote of 301-118.

Feinstein said the surveillance law has procedures to restrict use of information on Americans that is inadvertently captured in the intercepts.

Chambliss argued that the intelligence committee keeps watch over any abuses by the government. "It's not abused. If there is a problem, we fix it," he said.

Feinstein said there were 100 arrests in terrorism cases between 2009 and 2012, some of them as a direct result of the surveillance program.

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, tried to substitute a three-year extension of the law instead of five, but the proposal was defeated with 52 votes against and 38 in favor.

Vietnam police arrest well-known dissident lawyer

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? Vietnamese police have detained a well-known dissident lawyer, escalating a crackdown on those who speak out against the country's one-party, authoritarian rule.

Le Quoc Quan was arrested on his way to drop off his children at school Thursday in the capital, Hanoi, according to the Vietnamese Redemptorist Church's website. The state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Friday that Quan was detained for alleged tax evasion.

Quan, 41, had recently complained of harassment by authorities and required hospital treatment in August after being beaten by men he claimed were sent by the state. Since that incident, he had taken to carrying a golf club with him for self-defense.

Neither authorities nor Quan's family were available for comment.

Quan, who was detained in 2007 for three months on his return from a U.S. government-funded fellowship in Washington, is one of Vietnam's better-known dissidents and maintains a popular blog that highlighted human rights abuses and other issues off-limits to the state media.

In an interview with The Associated Press in September, Quan said he was under constant surveillance and that he, his family and staff received frequent warnings and pressure from authorities. But he pledged to keep speaking out against the government and in favor of multi-party democracy and freedom of speech and religion.

Vietnam converted to a market economy in the late 1980s and wants to integrate with the world, but maintains strict controls on freedom of speech and political expression. Bloggers, activists and others are routinely arrested and imprisoned. Foreign media representatives are allowed to live in Vietnam but are subject to restrictions on where they can travel and what they can report.

The Internet has emerged as a vital organizing tool for dissidents in recent years, and there has been a surge of blogs and Facebook pages highlighting criticism of the government. The rise of the Internet has combined with an economic slowdown, leaving the ruling elite feeling vulnerable.

In a related development, a court in Ho Chi Minh City Friday upheld long jail sentences two bloggers whose cases have attracted international criticism: Nguyen Van Hai, who received 12 years, and Ta Phong Tan, who received 10.

Judges said there were no grounds to alter the sentences passed down against the two in September for conducting "propaganda against the state", according to lawyer Ha Huy Son. A third member of the so-called "Free Journalist's Club," Phan Thanh Hai, had his four-year sentence reduced to three.

Nguyen Van Hai, who blogged under the name of Dieu Cay or tobacco pipe, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail in 2008 for what international human rights groups said were trumped-up tax evasion charges. He served out his sentence in October 2010, but was not released and charged with a new crime.

Last week, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung gave a fresh warning to dissidents, ordering police to prevent people from "forming opposition political groups to carry out sabotage and that go against the interests of the country and the people."

Margaret Paul, Ph.D.: 5 Choices to Help You Stay in Love

We all know that being in love is one of the very best feelings in the world. When we fall in love, we often believe that our in-love feelings are going to last forever.

In my counseling practice, I've worked with countless people who believed that, this time, the love would last.

Take Benjamin, for example. Benjamin had been married for 22 years when he decided to divorce his wife. He was tired of not feeling connected and intimate with her. He experienced her as closed and resistant, and he wanted a relationship with an open woman.

Soon after the divorce, Benjamin met Rachel at the home of a friend. They connected immediately. Benjamin called me, ecstatic. "I know it's really early in this relationship -- we've only known each other a couple of weeks, but I think I'm in love. It feels so good to be with an open and caring woman."

"Benjamin, please take your time. You are just out of a long marriage and you have barely settled into your new life. It really does take time to know someone. I'm glad you and Rachel are enjoying your time with each other, but please don't rush into anything."

I knew this was likely to fall on deaf ears. I've seen it so many times.

Two months after meeting, the bloom was off the rose.

"Rachel runs away when she is upset. It's frustrating to me to not be able to work things out with her. And she doesn't take good care of herself in a lot of ways. She takes care of everyone but herself."

Benjamin very much wanted to be in love, but he had not made the choices that would lead to lasting love.

Five Choices to Help You Stay in Love

1. Learn to love yourself

Do the inner work you need to do to be happy on your own. If you are abandoning yourself by not taking responsibility for your feelings, judging yourself, turning to various addictions, or making someone else responsible for making you feel full, loved, safe and adequate, you will meet someone who is also abandoning themselves in various ways. We meet each other at our common level of self-abandonment or health, so do the work you need to do to feel happy, peaceful and full of love inside. You don't need to be fully healed, as much healing can take place within a relationship, but you do need to know how to love yourself so you can share your love with others.

2. Take it slow

One of the major mistakes that many people make is moving too fast -- including having sex too early. For a sexual relationship to be deeply satisfying on the physical as well as on the emotional level, there needs to be deep caring and connection. Early "in-love" feelings are often nothing more than infatuation, as truly being in love happens over time -- if it is going to happen. If someone is rushing you into a relationship, be very cautious. Behind the beautiful words and dazzling pursuit may lurk neediness and narcissism.

3. Ask in-depth questions

Ask the important questions -- about values, money, children, religion/spirituality, past relationships. If you are afraid to be forthright in your questions, then the fear itself is letting you know that your fear of rejection may be in charge -- which means you have more inner work to do.

4. Don't shy away from conflict

All relationships have some conflict, and much can be learned from how you each deal with conflict. If you are avoiding the important questions, giving yourself up to keep the peace, or not speaking up for yourself, you will not learn what you need to regarding how the two of you handle conflict. If your new love closes down, gets angry or furious, goes into resistance or defensiveness, or turns to an addiction, this does not bode well for staying in love. An inability to resolve conflict is a major reason why in-love feelings fade away.

If your new love briefly does these protective behaviors, but then opens to learning with you, great. But if he or she does not open within the same day as the conflict, then it will be very hard for issues to get resolved between you.

5. Appreciation rather than judgment

You are not likely to fine someone who has everything you want, but hopefully he or she has many of the qualities you value. Instead of focusing on what you don't like and trying to change your partner with judgment, appreciate what is wonderful about your new love. This doesn't mean avoiding problems, as it is vital to explore the difficulties -- with an intent to learn -- but being judgmental is one of the quickest ways to put the lid on love.

While you will not always feel "in love" with your partner, following these five choices will give you a very good chance of feeling loving and connected with your partner much of the time.

'General Hospital' Star Steve Burton Joining 'The Young And The Restless' (REPORT)

Steve Burton might not be done with daytime after all. According to TV Guide Magazine, the "General Hospital" veteran -- who recently concluded his storyline as hitman Jason Morgan -- has just booked a major role on "The Young and the Restless."

Sources tell TVGM that Burton will join the cast of the CBS soap soon, with details of his role yet to be revealed. If true, the gig will see Burton reunited with "GH" executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, who left the ABC soap in January 2012 and joined "Y&R" in July.

Burton quit "GH" in August after more than two decades on the soap, telling TV Guide, "I've been through 21 years of ups and downs with 'GH' -- regime changes, cast and crew changes, budget cuts, shakeups of one kind or another, and it's been nothing but a huge positive in my life and for my family. I have no complaints, no negative feelings at all. But it's time to go."

Daytime Confidential speculates that Burton will play Dylan, Avery's (Jessica Collins) "mysterious" ex on "Y&R," while TV Line reports that the actor will begin taping after the holiday break to debut during February sweeps. CBS has yet to confirm the news.

How to Get the Most Out of Ezine Advertising | Dave In China ? Dave ...

If there is anything at all that makes you feel overwhelmed with your online business, then that just means you have to learn a bit more and get more comfortable. This is just a trial phase as you get more familiar with click here, and those who survive have a good chance of going all the way. There are several reasons why those who are making money with their business tend to outsource as much as possible. We will delve into alternatives that will work well with what we have just mentioned. Never forget, when you are first exposed to something you have never tried before, proceed with caution and do some testing before doing a major roll-out. However, regardless of how you approach outsourcing or anything else, just recover and roll with any mistakes you may make. Ezine advertising has traditionally not received as much press as other methods, but that does not mean it is less effective than all the others. There are most definitely some things you want to do and also avoid if you desire the highest conversions for your ads. What are the wise and necessary steps to find an ezine publisher that is good for you? One of the hallmarks of an ezine business that has been around is the number of resources available on their site such as for initiating your ad run. But needless to say, they want business; so if there is no such form then something else will no doubt be in place. You want to talk to them a little to gauge how professional they are in their business. When you execute little strategies like this, the ezine owner probably will have no clue; those who do not care are worth avoiding. Those ezine publishers who take the time and effort to make sure things flow smoothly are the one who will take care of your ads. Few things can compare in IM to the power of testing, and the reason for that is you can optimize based on the results. There are other things you can test, and running scaled down tests for speedupmypchq.com or methods previously never used is one of them. Who will ever know why people in business do not do the things that will help them to make more money. You will learn from your mistakes such as proceeding a too quickly and without enough thought about the consequences. The scope of some projects can quickly and easily overwhelm a lot of newer marketers, and in that case do some testing and see what your results are. The extent of what will be involved in any test situation will be determined by your primary method of marketing. Have an open mind to what you can do, and in this instance we are thinking about all that is possible with using your own website as a test platform. Most people make use of Google Analytics for tracking everything that happens on their site, and that will be suitable for any testing. We are not sure how you feel, but we certainly feel like taking care of our particular subject line for our ad. The response to your ad will be horrible if the subject lines in any ezines that run ads are just something that states it is a solo ad. You realize how important this point is, so just save the hassle and avoid dealing with those who do not allow you to make your own subject lines. You want to deal with someone with a clue and wants you to succeed by helping you as much as possible. Your preliminary research is designed to give you the best idea or feeling that running an ad in any ezine may be worth it. Also, like we said, keep in mind that the results of other advertisers can be an indication but no prediction of your results. You can check out the older issues of the ezine publication by going through its archives; this will give you a clear idea as to how many advertisers have used the ezine for their needs in the past and how many of them repeated their ads. There are no guarantees that the archives will be there, but if so then you have something more to research. You can make mistakes with ezine advertising if you ignore the fact finding stages before advertising. There will never be an end to mistakes, and so you merely learn and keep moving forward. Then, keep in mind that successful ads will depend on other factors as well such as your ad copy, so there is more to this.

Gameloft cuts many game prices to 99 cents, wants screen time on your gift phone

More than a few of us are getting phones and tablets as gifts this year, and Gameloft wants to be there the moment we're hunting for new apps to feed our devices. Accordingly, the developer has slashed the price on many of its recent games to 99 cents during the holidays, even including better-known titles like Asphalt 7 and Dark Knight Rises. Not surprisingly, the discounting doesn't include Modern Combat 4 and a few other releases -- there have to be profit-makers left somewhere, after all -- but it's a huge break for those who want a few starter titles and aren't concerned about always having the latest and greatest. Both Android and iOS gamers can splurge at the source links.

8 dead after Christmas Day fires in Philippines

(AP) ? Authorities in the Philippines say at least eight people are dead after two separate Christmas Day fires in the capital region. One of the blazes left about 1,500 people homeless when it razed their shantytown.

Arson investigator Rosendo Cabillan says a predawn fire Tuesday razed two apartment buildings in Quezon City, a Manila suburb. A veterinarian and six household members died after they were trapped inside.

Fire officer Noel Binwag says another blaze in suburban San Juan city hours earlier destroyed shanties of about 1,500 people.

Binwag says angry residents beat a man to death after accusing him of starting the fire.

He says two firemen also were injured when they were hit by rocks by some residents who grabbed their fire hoses to put out the blaze themselves.

How to 'tether' your PC to your phone

A lawsuit now makes 'tethering' PCs and phones cheaper.

By Chris Gaylord,?Staff writer / December 25, 2012

Last year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigated Verizon Wireless for stifling a very useful smart-phone trick.

While laptops often need cables or Wi-Fi networks to access the Internet, phones can log on from just about anywhere. So if you find yourself with excellent cellular reception but no Wi-Fi ? such as on a road trip, in an airport, or at home during a power outage ? why not connect your two devices? Let your smart phone deliver Internet access to your computer. It's called "tethering."

Until last summer, when Verizon settled with the FCC for $1.25 million, tethering was costly. Phone companies locked away the feature behind an extra monthly fee. Even if you never went over your phone's data allowance, the carriers wanted $15 to $20 a month to let you pass that data along to your PC.

Now, thanks to new monthly plans and software, tethering is much less expensive.

Verizon and AT&T revamped their data plans last summer. Both now focus on a large pool of data ? anywhere from 250 megabytes to 10 gigabytes a month ? that people can share across multiple devices and family members.

If you sign up for Verizon's Share Everything or AT&T's Mobile Share plans, tethering is free of charge ? as long as you stick to your monthly data allotment. Most smart phones come with a built-in "mobile hotspot" feature. For example, iPhone 5 owners can find the toggle by opening "Settings" and then "Cellular." Once the hotspot is turned on, computers can connect to it as if it were a Wi-Fi network.

Sprint, T-Mobile, and older plans from Verizon and AT&T still charge about $20 a month to turn on a phone's mobile hotspot. However, because of the FCC settlement, Verizon won't charge for using third-party tethering applications. The Android app store has several good options with one-time fees, such as PdaNet ($15) and EasyTether ($10). EasyTether Lite costs nothing, but blocks secure websites and instant messengers.

Tether.com tried to release a third-party ?iPhone app to escape Verizon's extra fee. However, Apple rejected the app, as it has all tethering apps. (Apple has not publicly said why.) So the engineers at Tether found a way around Apple. They rigged up a way to tether an iPhone to a computer completely through the phone's Web browser. The service costs $30 a year and works with Apple, Android, and BlackBerry devices. You'll need to watch your monthly data usage, but Tether.com says that its service is completely aboveboard.

Attacks by gunmen kill 2 Yemeni army officers

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Security officials say attackers on motorbikes have shot and killed two Yemeni army officers in two separate attacks in the capital, Sanaa.

The officials identified the two victims as Col. Fadhl Mohammed Jaber and Col. Saleem al-Gharbani. They say Tuesday's attacks took place in different parts of Sanaa. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to reporters.

Similar attacks have killed several senior Yemeni military and intelligence officials this year.

The government blames al-Qaida and says the militants are waging a retaliation campaign over a military offensive. The offensive was backed by U.S. advisers and managed to push militants out of strongholds in several southern towns.

The U.S. considers Yemen's al-Qaida branch to be the world's most active.

NRA: Public wants armed guards in every school

WASHINGTON (AP) ? National Rifle Association executive Wayne LaPierre says the American people think it would be "crazy" not to put armed guards in every school, as the group has suggested in the wake of the massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

LaPierre also contends that any new efforts by Congress to regulate guns or ammunition would not prevent mass shootings.

LaPierre's comments on NBC's "Meet the Press" reinforced the position that the largest gun-rights lobby took on Friday when it broke its weeklong silence on the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

That stand has described by some lawmakers as tone-deaf.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., says LaPierre blames everything but guns for a series of mass shootings in recent years.

'Star of Wonder' leaves lots to wonder about

Clay Frost / NBC News

The leading explanation for the blblical "Star of Wonder" is that the Three Wise Men saw a series of planetary conjunctions. Click on the image to launch a Flash interactive about the astronomical side of the Nativity story.

By Alan Boyle

The Star of Bethlehem is one of the best-known parts of the Christmas story, celebrated in the Gospel of Matthew as well in as a constellation of holiday songs. It was that star that led the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus ??at least if you believe the Bible. But is there anything in the astronomical record that supports the story of the "Star of Wonder"?

The answer is, maybe. The case of the Christmas Star illustrates how slippery things can get when you try to mix scripture and science.

First of all, there's no way to show a definitive connection between any astronomical phenomenon and the tale of the Nativity. On one hand, you could just say that the star was a miraculous apparition. In that case, no further evidence would be needed. On the other hand, you could say that the whole Nativity story, including the part about the Three Wise Men, is fictional. In that case, trying to find the Christmas Star would be as fruitless as trying to determine the real-life location of Dumbledore's tomb in the "Harry Potter" saga.

But if you go along with the astronomers who have looked into the likeliest scenarios to explain Matthew's references to the Christmas Star, the line of reasoning takes some surprising twists: The star could have been a series of planetary conjunctions, or a comet, or perhaps a nova. These events didn't occur during the year A.D. 1, which most people assume was the year Jesus was born. Instead, they occurred at least a couple of years earlier. They also didn't occur anywhere close to Dec. 25.

And here's what might be the most surprising twist: All this meshes with the views generally held by scriptural scholars.

Matthew's story tells of three "wise men" or "kings" ??who were actually astrologers. What they saw in their astronomical calculations led them to alert Judea's king, Herod the Great, to the birth of the "king of the Jews." Herod told the astrologers to look for the infant in Bethlehem and let him know what they found. Matthew says they came upon the infant Jesus, but were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.

Historical accounts?suggest that Herod died around the 4 B.C. ? although some scholars suggest the date could have been as early as 5 B.C. or as late as 1 B.C. Using this time frame, astronomers have checked the historical records and run computer simulations of the night sky?? and they've come up with these leading candidates for the Christmas Star:

Planets:?The simulations show that there was a rare series of planetary groupings, or conjunctions, in 3 B.C. and 2 B.C. The first conjunction was on the morning of June 12 in 3 B.C., with Venus close to Saturn in the eastern sky. The second conjunction was a spectacular pairing of Venus and Jupiter on Aug. 12 in the constellation Leo, which ancient astrologers associated with the destiny of the Jews.

Between September of 3 B.C. and June of 2 B.C., Jupiter would have passed by the star Regulus in Leo, reversed itself and passed it again, then turned back and passed the star a third time. This reversal was due to the planet's apparent retrograde motion?? a phenomenon familiar to the astrologers but not necessarily noticed by the casual observer. In his book on the Christmas Star, astronomer John Mosley says this would have been a significant event, because ancient astrologers considered Jupiter the kingly planet and regarded Regulus as the "king star."

The crowning touch came on June 17 of 2 B.C., when Jupiter was so close to Venus that "they would have looked like a single star," Mosley said. His scenario implies that the climax of the Nativity story came in the spring of 2 B.C.

There's a problem with this scenario, however: It doesn't work if Herod died in 4 B.C. An astronomer at the University of Sheffield, David Hughes, has proposed a different series of planetary conjunctions in 7 B.C. This was a triple conjunction, in which Jupiter and Saturn would appear to approach each other three times between May and December. "Events indicate that Jesus Christ was probably born in the autumn of that year, around October, 7 B.C.," Hughes wrote in a?paper published by the journal Nature.?

Comet: Other astronomers have considered the idea that the "star" was actually a comet. The likeliest candidate would be a comet recorded by Chinese astronomers in the year 5 B.C., in the constellation Capricorn or Aquila. Comet Halley would have been visible in 11 B.C., and the record suggests that other comets might have been seen in the time frame between those two dates.?"The snag is that they're not that rare,"?Hughes told the BBC. "They were also commonly associated with the 'four Ds' ? doom, death, disease and disaster. So if it did contain a message, it would have been a bad omen."?

Nova or supernova:?The Chinese were particularly good at chronicling supernovae, and the fact that none was recorded during the time frame in question has led most astronomers to discount a supernova as the explanation for the Christmas Star. However, astronomer Mark Kidger argues in his book, "The Star of Bethlehem," that the comet seen by the Chinese in 5 B.C. was actually a nova?? that is, a suddenly brightening star. The temporary brightening may not have caused a worldwide marvel, but if it came after a series of planetary conjunctions, it could have been enough of a signal to send the wise men on their way.

Kidger's scenario calls for the climax of the Christmas Star story to come in March of 5 B.C., after months of buildup. He even names his candidate for the Christmas Star: DO Aquilae, which is just faintly visible today.

What scholars say:?None of these scenarios would be consistent with Western Christianity's traditional schedule for the Christmas season, which calls for the "12 Days of Christmas" to begin on Dec. 25 and wind up with the arrival of the Three Kings on Epiphany, Jan. 6. However, scriptural scholars have pointed out that none of the Gospels refers to the date of Jesus' birth. In fact, the Gospel of Luke?s account about shepherds being out in their fields might make more sense if the birth occurred during the spring lambing season.

So how did Dec. 25, A.D. 1, get set as Jesus' birthdate? The current counting system for years (A.D. and B.C.) was set up in the sixth century by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus, who combined his reading of scripture, Roman history and end-of-the-world numerology to pick Year 1. Scriptural scholars now agree, however, that the timing of the Nativity story would make more sense if the birth occurred earlier than that?? because of the timing of Herod's death as well as a better understanding of the chronology for Roman emperors and governors.

As for the December date: Scholars say that the early Christian church wasn't all that interested in marking the day of Jesus' birth. For example, a 3rd-century theologian named Origen mocked the Romans for making such a big deal over divine birthdays.

Around the year 200, Clement of Alexandria noted that the favored dates for the birth were in the March-April-May time frame ? which would be consistent with the astronomical scenarios for the Christmas star.

It wasn't until the mid-4th century that Dec. 25 started showing up in church literature. The conventional wisdom is that Christmas was set in December after Constantine the Great's conversion to Christianity in 312, to bring the Christian holiday into line with?pagan celebrations of the solstice. But Andrew McGowan, warden and president of Trinity College at the University of Melbourne in Australia, argues in favor of an alternate explanation: that church leaders wanted to link their date for Jesus' conception with the presumed date of his death, on March 25. If you add nine months to March 25, you get Dec. 25 as the date of birth.

"Connecting Jesus' conception and death in this way will certainly seem odd to modern readers, but it reflects ancient and medieval understandings of the whole of salvation being bound up together," McGowan writes in this month's essay for Bible History Today.

The tale of Christmas and the Star of Wonder shows how astronomy and numerology can get tangled up with religion. But we're familiar with that, right? After all, we've just been through the apocalyptic angst surrounding the turnover of the Maya Long Count calendar. Fortunately, this week's turn of the calendar has a much more positive spin. So here's wishing you a wonderful holiday season of your choice ? whether it celebrates?Christmas or the solstice, the new year on the Gregorian calendar, or the new baktun for the Maya.

How would you change Sony's Xperia Ion?

How would you change Sony's Xperia Ion

While Sony undergoes its transformation under Kaz Hirai, there's a suspicion that many of its divisions have just been treading water. Take the Xperia Ion, for instance. The company's AT&T LTE flagship shipped in June, yet still carried the dead weight of Gingerbread as the albatross around its neck. Sony's engineering prowess produced sleek hardware, a cracking display, good camera and it was priced at $99 -- but was that a draw with a two-year-old operating system and 2011-era internals? Probably not. But if you were in the minority who bought one of these, what do you think? If you were sure Sony's engineering gurus were reading your every word, what would you tell them to do differently next time?

Real Politix ? Stock Market Tips To Invest In Your Future

TIP! Paper trading is a good way to lead up to stock market investing. This is good practice without losing any actual money.

Stock market investing is an activity that many people dream about, however, you should always proceed with caution. The following article will offer you many great tips to consider as you begin to buy stock, so you can get the most out of your money. Keep on reading so you can learn more.

TIP! A good goal for your stocks to achieve is a minimum of a 10 percent return on an annual basis, because any lower, you might as well just invest in an index fund for the same results. If the stock includes dividends you would simply add that percentage to the the growth rate percentage to determine the total likely return on the investment.

A broker who works with both in-person and online purchases is a good choice if you want to have the advice of a full-service broker, but would also like to do your own purchasing decisions. Doing so allows you to take on as much or as little responsibility as you would like. When you do this, you gain more control of your investments while still having that professional assistance.

TIP! Keep in mind items you use every day when thinking of stocks to buy. You should listen to your instinct.

It is important to consider a company?s voting rights when determining if you?d like to invest with them. Many times the corporate management team only hold five percent stock, but somehow manage to control seventy percent of the power when it comes to voting. When you find a company like this, this is usually a sign to keep away.

TIP! Basically when investing in stocks, the keep it simple approach works best. Reduce your risk by keeping all investment activities, including examining data points, predicting and trading, extremely simple.

The stock market is not a scheme to get rich quickly. To do well in the stock market, you must first learn about the market. You have to take a little time in order to make some mistakes. Then, learn from them. If you believe you?ll get rich overnight, you?ll be sadly disappointed.

TIP! Use an online broker if you don?t mind researching stocks on your own. You can find it cheaper using a virtual broker as opposed to a real broker, you can find a lot of discounts online.

One tip is to locate stocks that have growth rates slightly more than average, but not drastically so. They tend to have more reasonable prices for their value compared to high-growth stocks. High-growth stocks are typically in hot demand, which pushes prices up even higher and they ultimately have trouble meeting the inflated demands of money-hungry investors.

TIP! It can be better to buy many shares of affordable stocks instead of a few shares of pricier ones. These stocks are a lot easier to manage and sell.

Never keep your funds trapped in stocks that are unprofitable. While a stock may be steady and not losing or gaining, there is no reason to keep your money in it. Look for something with more consistent growth.

TIP! Remember you are buying ownership when you buy stocks. Some people buy a stock they hear is good, but keep in mind that you are purchasing a piece of that company.

Prior to placing funds with a professional broker, be sure you conduct sufficient research into their background. Carefully investigating before giving them your money helps you avoid unscrupulous and inexperienced brokers.

TIP! Consider the value of a stock, rather than its price. Is the stock suitable for holding over the long term? If the stock price is abnormally low, figure out why this is so you can determine whether or not it would be a good investment.

When you?re looking a diversifying your portfolio, remember that there are a lot of different factors to consider; it?s not just different sectors you need to worry about. You do not need to include all of these factors in your strategy for investing. You can assemble a collection of stocks from multiple sectors, each chosen based on a unique set of criteria.

TIP! Online stock trading can be a great way to invest while saving money. There are many firms online which offer very low fees.

Choose the top stocks in multiple sectors to create a well-balanced portfolio. Though the market, as a whole, records gains in the aggregate, individual sectors will grow at different rates. By having a wide arrangement of stocks in all sectors, you will see more growth in your portfolio, overall. If you re-balance your position on a continuous basis, your losses in the industries that are not growing or are losing ground is minimized. Furthermore, you can hold your position to prepare for the spurt of growth.

TIP! When analyzing a stock, find out its price/earnings ratio and compare it to the stock?s projected total return. A good rule of thumb is that the ratio of price to earning be less than two times the projected return.

There are a lot of great reasons to begin investing in the stock market. However, making smart investments and educating yourself must be your top priority. If you utilize the advice from this article, you should be on the right path to making sound financial choices.

A homegoing celebration will take place at The First Cathedral in Bloomfield, Conn., for Ana Marquez-Greene. The 6-year-old with a beaming voice sang in a home video with her brother, who was also at Sandy Hook Elementary School during the massacre, and seemed destined to take after her father, a jazz musician.

Emilie Parker, the budding artist who carried her markers and pencils everywhere, will be laid to rest in Ogden, Utah today.

The 6-year-old would have been one of the first to comfort her classmates at Sandy Hook Elementary School, had a gunman's bullets not claimed her life, her father said.

"My daughter Emilie would be one of the first ones to be standing and giving support to all the victims because that's the kind of kid she is," her father, Robbie Parker, said last Saturday.

"She always had something kind to say about anybody," Parker said. "We find comfort reflecting on the incredible person Emilie was and how many lives she was able to touch."

(AP) ? U.S. military officials are investigating the apparent suicide of a Navy SEAL commander in Afghanistan.

Navy SEAL Cdr. Job W. Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pa., died Saturday of a non-combat-related injury while supporting stability operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan.

A U.S. military official said the death "appears to be the result of suicide." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the death is still being investigated.

"The Naval Special Warfare family is deeply saddened by the loss of our teammate," said Capt. Robert Smith, Commander of Naval Special Warfare Group Two, which manages all Virginia-based Navy SEAL teams. "We extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and NSW community during this time of grieving."

"As we mourn the loss and honor the memory of our fallen teammate, those he served with will continue to carry out the mission," Smith added Sunday.

A U.S. military official confirmed Price was from Virginia Beach, Va.-based SEAL Team 4, which is part of the mission to train Afghan local police to stave off the Taliban in remote parts of Afghanistan. Price is survived by a wife and a daughter.
