Helpful Tips On How To Achieve Healthy Hair ?

As major corporations are researching on an actual cure for hair loss so they can make millions of dollars in profits, people who are currently losing there hair are desperately trying a multitude of products in hopes of finding something that works. The hints and tips in the following article may just provide you with information on a product or technique that is your personal solution to avoiding, reducing, or reversing hair loss.

For men and the occasional woman who suffers from hair loss, it can be confusing to know how to cleanse the head. As long as you have more than just stubble on top, it is essential that you continue using shampoo instead of switching over to soap.

Grow your hair fuller and thicker prior to cutting it. Cutting your hair when it is very short weakens it, so you need to let it grow a little longer.

If the hair loss has started without warning, consider how high your current stress levels are. Having a stressful work environment may lead to more hair loss than normal, but on the brighter side, if you reduce your stress level, that should help the hair return to a normal growth pattern.

There are certain hair styles that you should avoid. Often times, when you wear your hair pulled back in a ponytail this can cause hair loss. Tight styles such as braids and cornrows can pull your hair out by the roots.

Consider your diet if you are worried about hair loss. Food high in carbohydrates, such as fast food, can lead to an imbalanced diet and unhealthy hair. Attempt to consume more high-protein foods and low-fat foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables can also help to reduce the amount of hair you lose and help to improve your overall health.

If you don?t have proper nutrients, you can suffer from hair loss. To grow healthy hair, you need to eat healthy foods including fruits and vegetables.

There are many sources of B12 available both naturally, and from a store. You can also find it as a supplement or just eat more foods such as chicken and beef.

Minimize exposure to harmful toxins or pollutants in order to help keep your hair luscious and beautiful. These harmful substances can affect your health, and poor health is one of the primary causes of hair thinning and loss. Avoid breathing in toxic air and always wear plastic gloves when handling strong chemicals so they don?t absorb into your skin.

Put the hair onto your scalp once daily for regrowing hair. Use only a few small drops and then rub it in.

As unbelievable as it seems, the relaxation benefits of meditation may actually help treat your hair loss. When your stressed out and filled with anxiety, your hair may start to fall out due to the blood vessels in your scalp constricting. Increased blood flow to the scalp is what you should aim for, and meditation can actually help you to achieve this.

Illness, stress, anemia, weight change, and more can cause hair loss, temporarily. Temporary hair loss starts about 3 months after the end of an event, and generally lasts 3 months too. Be aware that this happens and use the knowledge as needed.

Saw palmetto in liquid supplement form may be useful if you are a man dealing with hair loss. Natural extractions from saw palmetto can help slow the synthesis of DHT. DHT is a male hormone believed by many to be a factor in hair loss. To use this technique, take the juice from the fruit and apply it to your scalp and hair.

The information here is about giving you the best techniques and products to get your hair growing again. Make sure you try a few different methods to keep your hair.

Asian markets mixed ahead of Bernanke speech

Asian markets were mixed on Wednesday, with attention turning to a speech by US Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke later in the week as dealers look for an indication of any stimulus by the central bank.

And the euro eased against the yen and dollar after rising late Tuesday following successful bond auctions in Spain and Italy and on expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will restart a bond-buying programme.

Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 index closed 36.52 points higher at 9,069.81, with shares in Renesas Electronics soaring 35.08 percent to 308 yen after reports that US investment fund Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. plans to spend $1.3 billion to take control of the troubled microchip maker.

The world's biggest producer of air-conditioners, Daikin Industries, fell 3.53 percent to 2,073 yen after reports that it would acquire US rival Goodman Global for 300 billion yen ($3.8 billion).

Sharp Corp. jumped 6.97 percent to 230 yen, as concerns eased over a cash crunch at the consumer electronics giant on expectations of support from its banks and Taiwanese partner Hon Hai Precision

The Seoul index added 0.64 percent, or 12.21 points, to 1,928.54. Sydney closed flat, edging down 0.07 percent, or 2.98 points, to 4,356.4 points.

Hong Kong fell 0.12 percent, or 23.29 points, to 19,788.51 and Shanghai eased 0.96 percent, or 19.91 points, to 2,053.24, its lowest since February 2009.

Bernanke is due to address central bankers at an annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday, with investors hoping he will outline plans for further measures to boost the world's number one economy.

"Players remain in wait-and-see mode leading up to the Jackson Hole summit where more hints on information about the direction of monetary policy are expected," said Hiroichi Nishi, general manager of equities at SMBC Nikko Securities, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

Global markets enjoyed an impressive rally in August on hopes for fresh Fed stimulus and bond-buying by the ECB, while Chinese leaders are also expected to loosen monetary policy to kickstart the Asian giant.

On forex markets the euro bought $1.2541 and 98.52 yen in afternoon Asian trade, compared with $1.2565 and 98.68 yen in New York late Tuesday.

The single currency was provided some support by news that ECB head Mario Draghi would not attend Jackson Hole, which stoked speculation a new round of bond buying was near.

The dollar was at 78.50 yen against 78.49 yen.

Wall Street provided an anaemic lead after mixed economic data.

The Conference Board reported its US consumer confidence index dropped to a nine-month low of 60.6 for August, down from 65.9 in July.

The report showed consumers grew less confident about business and job prospects in the coming months.

Before the opening bell, the S&P Case-Shiller Home Price Index of 20 cities showed prices rose for the fifth straight month in June, by 1.0 percent.

The Dow fell 0.17 percent and the S&P 500 slipped 0.08 percent while the tech-rich Nasdaq rose 0.13 percent.

On Tokyo's Nikkei index shares in troubled microchip maker Renesas closed up 35.08 percent at 308 yen after media reports that a US investment fund plans to spend $1.3 billion to take control of it.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) reportedly hopes to reach a formal agreement with the firm's top three Japanese stakeholders -- NEC, Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric -- as early as September.

The investment of 100 billion yen would dwarf Renesas's market capitalisation of about 95 billion yen as of Tuesday.

Oil eased, with New York's main contract, light sweet crude for October delivery shedding 83 cents to $95.50 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for delivery in the same month slipping 66 cents to $111.92.

Gold was at $1,664.50 at 0810 GMT compared to $1,661.90 on Tuesday.

In other markets:

-- Taipei rose 0.40 percent, or 29.21 points, to 7,391.15.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co was 0.36 percent higher at Tw$82.7 while leading smartphone maker HTC gained 2.01 percent at Tw$253.5.

-- Manila closed 0.39 percent higher, adding 20.10 points to 5,195.72.

Metropolitan Bank and Trust rose 1.39 percent to 94.85 pesos and SM Prime Holdings added 0.29 percent to 13.80 pesos.

-- Wellington closed flat, edging down 0.66 points to 3,628.39.

Telecom was down 0.2 percent at NZ$2.43 and Air New Zealand was flat at NZ$0.90.

Computer viruses could take a lesson from showy peacocks

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Computer viruses are constantly replicating throughout computer networks and wreaking havoc. But what if they had to find mates in order to reproduce?

In the current issue of Evolution, Michigan State University researchers created the digital equivalent of spring break to see how mate attraction played out through computer programs, said Chris Chandler, MSU postdoctoral researcher at MSU's BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action.

"This is actually a big question that still generates a lot of debate," said Chandler, who co-authored the study with Ian Dworkin, assistant professor of zoology, and Charles Ofria, associate professor of computer science and engineering. "People have some good ideas, but they can be hard to test really well in nature, so we decided to take a different approach."

The novel approach involved creating promiscuous programs in a virtual world called Avida, a software environment in which specialized computer programs compete and reproduce. Because mutations happen when Avidians copy themselves, which lead to differences in reproductive rates, these digital organisms evolve, just like living things, added Ofria, who created Avida.

The researchers programed the Avidians with the ability to grow sexual displays -- e-peacock tails of sorts. They also allowed them to choose mates randomly. As the researchers predicted, they usually went for the showiest mates. But why?

"One school of thought argues that the main benefit of choosing an attractive partner is that your offspring also will be sexy," said Dworkin. "In the other camp are those who argue that these sexual ornaments are a sign of good health, and so choosing a showy mate ensures that you'll get good genes to pass on to your offspring."

Traditionally, biologists thought that ornamental displays clue in potential mates about an individual's virility because the structures are costly, biologically speaking; only an animal in really good health could bear the burden they impose. So the researchers altered Avidians' genetic code to allow them to grow exaggerated displays practically for free.

They expected this change to diminish the evolutionary benefits of preferring showy mates, since even the wimpiest of Avidians could now grow enormous digital tail feathers.

"I was surprised when we didn't find that at all," Chandler said. "Even when we eliminated the costs of these displays, they still evolved to be an indicator of a male's genetic quality."

MSU's BEACON Center is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Israeli court rejects activist's family's lawsuit

HAIFA, Israel (AP) ? An Israeli court on Monday rejected a lawsuit brought against the military by the parents of a U.S. activist crushed to death by an army bulldozer during a 2003 demonstration, ruling the army was not at fault for her death.

The bulldozer driver has said he didn't see 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, who was trying to block the vehicle's path during a demonstration in the Gaza Strip against the military's demolition of Palestinian homes. The military deemed her March 2003 death to be accidental, but Corrie's parents were not satisfied by the army investigation and filed a civil lawsuit two years later.

Explaining the district court's ruling, Judge Oded Gershon said Corrie "put herself in a dangerous situation" and called her death "the result of an accident she brought upon herself." He said the military conducted a proper investigation, and rejected the Corrie family's request for a symbolic $1 in damages and legal expenses.

Corrie's parents, Craig and Cindy Corrie of Olympia, Washington, did not speak immediately after the verdict, but clasped each other's hands.

Their lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein, lamented the court's ruling, saying "the verdict blames the victim."

"While not surprising, this verdict is yet another example of where impunity has prevailed over accountability and fairness," he said. "Rachel Corrie was killed while non-violently protesting home demolitions and injustice in Gaza, and today, this court has given its stamp of approval to flawed and illegal practices that failed to protect civilian life."

The home demolitions were part of an unsuccessful campaign to halt thousands of attacks on soldiers and Jewish settlers in southern Gaza, along the border with Egypt, in the preceding 3 ? years. On the day Rachel Corrie died, she and other activists had entered a closed military zone to protest the demolition policy.

According to the U.N. agency handling Palestinian refugees, the military had left more than 17,000 Gazans homeless in the four years after a Palestinian uprising against Israel erupted in September 2000. The demolitions drew international condemnation at the time.

In her death, Corrie became the embodiment of what Palestinian activists say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. Israel says by entering conflict zones to try to interfere with military activities, activists recklessly choose to risk their lives.

For her parents, her death was a family tragedy that cost them a beloved child and drained their savings. Since the Corries went to court in 2005, they say they have spent $200,000 to fly in witnesses, attend 15 hearings and translate more than 2,000 pages of court transcripts.

Their case was the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

How to Tell If You Have Orthorexia - Shape Magazine

Striving to be a healthy eater seems good for you, especially when you?re cutting out things like added sugars and adding more fresh veggies. But some people go to such extremes to clean up their diets that they develop an eating disorder called orthorexia nervosa.

?A person with orthorexia almost obsessively eats only certain foods that they?ve deemed to be ?healthy? and won?t touch anything else,? says Jennifer Lombardi, executive director at Summit Eating Disorders, a partner of the Eating Recovery Center in Denver, Colorado. ?The initial intention of the person is to become healthier by eating higher-quality and ?purer? foods, but she takes this to extremes, and it spirals out of control, leading to poor health, dangerously low body weight, injury, or illness.?

Unfortunately orthorexia is harder to identify than disorders such as anorexia or bulimia. ?One major obstacle is that we live in a culture that emphasizes the importance of being fit, eating healthy, and aspiring to make the ?right? choices when it comes to food, so what?s essentially turning into an illness for someone can be masked under the veil of healthy living,? Lombardi says.

To tell if your diet has gone to the extreme, ask yourself these questions from the National Eating Disorders Association:
? Do you wish that occasionally you could just eat and not worry about food quality?
? Do you ever wish you could spend less time on food and more time on living and loving?
? Does it sound beyond your ability to eat a meal prepared with love by someone else?one single meal?and not try to control what is served?
? Are you constantly looking for the ways foods are unhealthy for you?
? Do love, joy, play, and creativity take a backseat to having the perfect diet?
? Do you feel guilt or self-loathing when you stray from your diet?
? Do you feel in control when you eat the correct diet?
? Have you positioned yourself on a nutritional pedestal and wonder how others can possibly eat the food they eat?

Similarly, be concerned about friends if you notice any sudden and drastic changes in their behavior, find them labeling foods as ?good? or ?bad,? realize that they?ve completely eliminated entire food groups such as carbs or fat from their daily meals, or find them planning their entire lives around food, Lombardi says. If you?re worried, talk to your friend and be clear about your concerns for her, giving specific examples of what you?ve noticed, says Lombardi, then encourage her to seek treatment.

Whether for yourself or for a friend, Lombardi suggests using a site such as edreferral.com to search for experienced professionals near you. The good news is that, as with any eating disorder, ?lasting recovery is entirely possible, especially if treatment is sought early on,? she says.

Portland archbishop apologizes after abuse claim

REEDSPORT, Ore. (AP) ? The archbishop of Portland issued an apology that was read at Sunday Mass to a woman who settled a lawsuit claiming she was sexually abused by a priest in the 1980s.

Carolee Horning, 41, was at St. John the Apostle Parish in Reedsport when the letter from Archbishop John Vlazny was read, the Eugene Register-Guard (bit.ly/Nxzh51) reported.

The priest, the Rev. Edward Altstock, was a family friend when he headed the parish from 1984 to 1986, and Horning was a teenager who had been an altar girl.

She said she was flattered by gifts and attention from such a figure of authority, and he pursued her for years, even visiting her in Corvallis when she was a student at Oregon State University.

"Father Altstock was a friend of the Horning family and took unfair advantage of the high regard in which the family held him," said the letter read by Monsignor Dennis O'Donovan, the second-ranking official in the archdiocese. "He was a trusted pastor and betrayed that trust."

The Register-Guard said Altstock was not charged with a crime because the situation was beyond the statute of limitations. He declined to comment on the case, the newspaper said.

Calls Monday from The Associated Press to a number listed for Altstock went unanswered.

This summer, the archdiocese, which does not dispute the claims of a sexual relationship, settled with Horning for $480,000 and the promise of a personal apology from the pulpit.

At the 8:45 a.m. service, Horning sat between her father and mother, who are still members of the congregation. They were among more than 100 people in the church, including a contingent visiting from a Lutheran church that Horning joined last year.

She said the letter was not wholly satisfactory because it devoted more words to the archdiocese's response to her allegations than it did to expressing regret or offering apologies.

"I wasn't very comfortable with them trying to defend themselves," she said.

Horning manages an animal hospital. She said the abuse "stunted my growth."

"I have hardly dated," she said. "I have never had a boyfriend. I have just hidden away. When girls my age were learning how to date and flirt and stuff ? I just didn't do that."

The archdiocese, which covers churches in western Oregon, filed for bankruptcy protection in 2004 as a result of suits from people who said priests sexually abused them as children. It emerged from bankruptcy in 2007 with a $50 million settlement of more than 175 claims. Another $20 million was set aside to handle future claims.

Horning's lawyer, Gilion Dumas, said the amount of the settlement is a matter of public record because the federal bankruptcy court maintains jurisdiction. The suit sought $14 million.

Efforts by the AP to reach Horning were unsuccessful.

With the settlement money, Horning said, she paid off her car, and she's planning to take her family to Disneyland. The rest is going into retirement investments.

"It wasn't about the money," she said. "That was one of the reasons I settled. If you go to trial, all you can get is money."

Like Your Cat: Getting A New Kitten - Things To Consider Before ...

Thinking of getting a new kitten? When you get a pet, the responsibility towards it is no less than that of caring for a child. If you are considering getting a new kitten there are things to consider before you bring it home. Some cats can live as long as 20 years so it is not a decision to take lightly. Besides being able to commit to taking care of the cat for its lifetime, there are a few other important decisions that you will need to make.

- Allergies are an issue for many people. An allergy to cats can be brutal when there's a cat in the home. Nothing can break the heart of a child quicker than introducing a new pet then, finding out that it cannot stay. Make sure that family members have had at least some exposure to a cat prior to bringing one home.

- Many cats live to be around 20 years old. That's a long time to be obligated to a pet. For most of these years, the cat will be mature and be a welcome member of the family.

- Kittens are babies too! Introducing a kitten into a home with a small toddler can be an appealing idea. Keep in mind that babies learn from their play. While both a toddler and a kitten are still babies, they play very differently.

Reasoning with a toddler is a challenge, but it is much easier than trying to reason with a kitten. You may find that you kitten will learn some unacceptable methods of play. Kittens naturally use their claws during play. Toddlers naturally bang and chew everything in sight.

This difference in their natural methods of play could be an issue since the toddler will unknowingly teach the kitten to play roughly. If you choose to introduce a kitten into your home with a toddler, be prepared for a kitten that plays by scratching and biting.

- Kittens grow quickly. That cute baby that caught your eye will soon be tearing through your home, climbing the curtains and clawing at the furniture. This will leave you looking for alternate ways for them to "play". Consider some options early and save yourself some frustration.

- Kittens are tough to train. This is not because they are not smart enough to learn. You may have a great deal of luck teaching your kitten to do one or two things. Cats have a natural attitude. They seem to know what you want from them, but they have their own way of doing things. You are there for their convenience and you should know it.

- Kitten-proofing your home. The items that attract a kitten are different than the items that attract a child. Kitten proofing is a matter of protecting your home as well as the kitten. Look around at the type of things that may look like a toy to a kitten.

Anything that may be hanging, or trailing, if it moves then it's a toy to your kitten! Any and all loose wire and cables need to be secured. You may choose to use cable tacks and attach them firmly to walls or along the baseboard, counter top, up desk legs, etc. This is particularly important with any items that may harm your kitten if they should fall.

Trailing plants such as ivy may also need to be secured, although if kitty is attracted to a plant, this could be just as hazardous to the plant as the kitten!

These days, mini-blinds come with 2 cords instead of one continuous cord. This change was due to the hanging hazard associated with the single cord. Check window treatments, lamps, and any other corded features in your home to ensure that they won't attract the attention of your new kitten.

Small shiny objects that can be batted around will also attract your kitten. Keep things like jewelry, paper clips, rubber bands, thumb tacks and tread and yarns put away out of kitty's reach.

Kittens are small and fragile. Like toddlers, they have no concept of danger. Also like toddlers, they are fearless. Taking the time to Limit the potential hazards in your home will create a safer environment for your kitten.

Effect of MitraClip therapy on mitral regurgitation: Clinical and functional improvement for majority of patients at one-year in prospective observational study

Munich, Germany The percutaneous catheter-based treatment of mitral regurgitation with the MitraClip system improves symptoms and cardiac function at one-year, according to results of a prospective observational study presented here today at ESC Congress 2012.

ACCESS-EUROPE (ACCESS-EU) was a multicentre study of the MitraClip system in a commercial setting in 567 patients enrolled at 14 European sites, the largest group of patients evaluated to date. The results were presented by the study's co-principal investigator Professor Wolfgang Schillinger of the Universittsmedizin Gttingen in Germany.

"ACCESS-EU provides further confirmation of clinical and functional benefits of the MitraClip system in a real-world setting at one year," said Professor Schillinger. "The results are consistent with those from controlled clinical trials, although patients in ACCESS-EU were older and sicker."

Patients enrolled in ACCESS-EU were elderly (mean age 74 10 years) with significant baseline co-morbidities, including coronary artery disease in 63% and moderate to severe renal disease in 42%. At baseline, 85% were in NYHA Functional Class III/IV, and 53% had left ventricular ejection fraction less than 40%. Seventy-seven percent had functional mitral regurgitation, and many patients were considered at high risk for mitral valve surgery, with an average logistic EuroSCORE of 23 18%.

At one year 82% of patients treated with the MitraClip system were free from death, 79% free from mitral regurgitation grade above 2+, and 94% free from mitral valve surgery. Following treatment, the majority of patients showed significant clinical improvements, with 72% now classified in NYHA Class I/II. In addition, results reflected an improved functional capacity, with a median improvement of 60.5 meters for six-minute walk distance. Improvements in quality of life were also recorded, as shown in a median improvement of 14.0 points between baseline and one-year scores on the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire.

"Where the benefits of surgery do not outweigh the surgical risks, the MitraClip treatment is an important alternative for patients with mitral regurgitation," said Professor Schillinger.

As background to the study he added that mitral valve regurgitation is the most commonly diagnosed type of valvular insufficiency, affecting more than one in ten people over the age of 75 approximately 4 million people in Europe alone. Significant mitral regurgitation is a debilitating condition in which the heart's ability to function continues to deteriorate over time and may lead to heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, or death. The condition has traditionally been managed with medications, which can temporarily relieve symptoms but do not address the underlying cause of the condition, or with open-heart surgery. Approximately 50% of patients are considered high risk for complications from surgery because of advanced age, significant ventricular dysfunction, or other serious co-morbidities and are denied surgery.

The MitraClip system includes a catheter-based device that is delivered to the heart through the femoral vein. The system is designed to reduce significant mitral regurgitation by clipping together the leaflets of the mitral valve.

Livestrong donations skyrocket after Armstrong?s decision

Armstrong at the Tour de France in 2010 (AP)

Last week, after iconic American cyclist Lance Armstrong said he would no longer fight the charges brought against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, many wondered if Livestrong--the foundation for cancer survivors founded by the seven-time Tour de France winner and testicular cancer survivor--would suffer as a result.

It doesn't look like it.

On Friday, Armstrong said that donations to Livestrong were up 25 times over the day before. "Thank you thank you thank you!" he wrote on Twitter.

Doug Ulman, Livestrong's chief executive, told ESPN that the foundation had received $78,000 in unsolicited donations in the 24 hours following the announcement of Armstrong's decision. Compare that to Thursday, when Livestrong received just $3,200.

"It's been really tricky for the organization to be able to deal with all of these challenges to Lance's image," Stacey Palmer, editor of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, told NPR, "but one of the things that's so interesting is that they've managed to increase their fundraising and demonstrate that they're much beyond what his role is."

Ulman said Livestrong has seen a 13 percent increase in contributions in the last 12 months.

[Slideshow: Armstrong banned for life]

As a result of the doping charges, Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour titles and been banned for life from professional cycling. He is, however, still competing in bike races. On Saturday, Armstrong finished second in a 36-mile mountain bike race in Aspen, Colo., where he made his first public comments since being hit with the lifetime ban.

"Nobody needs to cry for me," Armstrong told reporters. "I'm going to be great.

"It's not so much about racing anymore," he continued. "For me, it's more about staying fit and coming out here and enjoying one of the most beautiful parts of the world, on a beautiful day, on a very hard course."

Since Armstrong launched Livestrong in 1997, the foundation has raised close to $500 million.

"Drugs or no drugs," Matthew Serge wrote on Twitter, "anyone that raises $500 million to fight cancer is cool by me."

"I'm focused on the future," Armstrong said after the Colorado race. "I've got five great kids, a great lady in my life, a wonderful foundation that's completely unaffected by any noise out there, and we're going to continue to do our job. The people like the people who are standing around here or on the course, they voiced their opinion in the last 48 hours and are going to support us."

Jeremy Swanson, a photographer who shot Armstong in Aspen, tweeted: "#StillMyHero."

The winner of Saturday's race, 16-year-old Keegan Swirbul, added: "I'm so psyched right now--to beat the seven-time Tour champ."

(AP) ? The site of the National Republican Convention showed no signs of a coming deluge Saturday, even as the approaching Tropical Storm Isaac sent officials across the state into full-scale preparation mode.

Streets were already shut down around the Tampa Bay Times Forum, where former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will accept his party's presidential nomination Thursday night. Law enforcement milled about downtown, and some protests already were under way. One group protesting homelessness and the housing crisis "took over" a foreclosed home by cleaning the yard and planned to help a homeless couple move in.

Convention officials announced Saturday evening that they planned to convene the convention briefly on Monday, then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm is expected to have passed. Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, declared a state of emergency and canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

A hurricane warning had been issued for the Florida Keys, and officials warned tourists to leave. Forecast models show Isaac likely won't hit Tampa head-on, but it could lash the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention ramps up.

"I told some of my Democratic friends, 'We are the storm, baby, we are the thunder,'" said Steve Linder, whose business is planning all events for the Michigan delegation. Linder added, smiling, "and it ain't gonna stop until November."

Dianne Joachim of New Richmond, Wis., was in town for her first convention and vowed not to let Isaac ruin it.

"I just figure God's got this," she said as she arrived at her downtown hotel.

Scott said during a media briefing that delegates were being told how to stay safe during a storm, and officials were ready for storm surge, bridge closures and other problems that could arise during the convention. He also said he was in close communication with local, state and federal agencies, as well as convention officials.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," the governor said.

Isaac was blamed for at least three deaths after dousing flood-prone Haiti and was expected to scrape eastern Cuba on Saturday. It was forecast to hit the Keys late Sunday or early Monday, and it then could bring stormy conditions to Florida's west coast before moving to the Panhandle.

Isaac was expected to pass over the Keys as a hurricane late Sunday or early Monday. A steady stream of cars moved north along the Overseas Highway on Saturday, but officials said there were no major problems as some evacuated. At spots of higher ground along the highway, the only road connecting the Keys, dozens of people parked their cars to escape flooding.

At The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, workers were moving recovering turtles from outdoor tanks inside, and hospital founder Richie Moretti said warnings were being taken seriously. He noted Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was initially expected to hit as a Category 1 storm, too.

"It took out the motel, the hospital, the docks, and all the boats. So, I don't take anything for granted. If there's a storm coming, I don't care what number they give it. We're going to batten down and be ready," he said.

Volunteers carried in supplies at shelters throughout the Keys. On Duval Street, the famed tourist strip in Key West, many shops were boarded up. Bands of light rain moved through and passersby crowded under umbrellas and wore ponchos and slickers.

"The weather sucks, but on Tuesday it'll be nice," said an optimistic Kelly Calhoun, a 30-year-old speech therapist at the start of a weeklong vacation to Key West with family. "We got all the essentials: booze and food."

Yet the storm was days away from the Florida Panhandle. It was sunny and breezy on the beach Saturday in Pensacola, with people out strolling and playing in the sand. Condo associations told people to move furniture inside, but full-scale preparations hadn't yet begun. Waves weren't yet big enough for surfers.

When the storm hits, strong winds will be "enough to knock you over" and produce severe thunderstorms, National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said.

Storm surge and tornadoes also are possible when Isaac hits, and winds could topple power lines and lead to lengthy power outages, Feltgen said. The Panhandle already has had a wet summer, so potential flooding was especially possible there.

Schools, airports, parks and beaches across South Florida closed ahead of the storm. In the Florida Keys, officials said they would open storm shelters and urged vacationers to leave. State officials warned Isaac was a massive storm ? even though the eye may not pass over Tampa, tropical storm-force winds extended 230 miles from the center.

Officials were handing out sandbags to residents in the Tampa area, which often floods when heavy rainstorms hit. Sandbags also were being handed out in Homestead, 20 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated the community there. Otherwise, however, convention preparations were moving ahead as usual.

Police said even heavy rain could reduce the protesters' ranks, and could also bring relief from another worry: extreme heat.

Question: question for investing in gold or silver?

hi i was just wondering if i were to get a job (note im 16 years old) will converting all my paycheck money to silver be a good idea keep in mind i will probley be only making 300-700 a month. or should i save and just buy gold by the ounce? if gold why? if silver why?

Answer:

Neither.

You should save your money in something without nearly the risk of a precious metals investment. A bank account might be a good idea.

Unbelievable the bubble we have built up in gold and silver. At the end of all bubbles it?s people like 16 year olds making $ 500/month that are left holding the bag.

IAEA may say 'pointless' to inspect Iran nuke site

Iran has "sanitized" to such an extent a military base where nuclear weapons research allegedly took place that the UN atomic watchdog may say next week there is now little point inspecting it, Western diplomats told AFP.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has been pushing Iran to allow access to Parchin, most recently at a failed meeting in Vienna on Friday, where it suspects explosives testing consistent with nuclear bomb research occurred.

Iran, subject to unprecedented Western sanctions and amid heightened speculation of Israeli military action, denies seeking or ever having sought nuclear weapons but has so far blocked the IAEA's requests to see the site.

Western nations have accused Iran of bulldozing parts of the sprawling base near Tehran and the IAEA said in May that activities spotted there by satellite "could hamper the agency's ability to undertake effective verification."

On August 1 US think-tank the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) published open-source satellite images showing "what appears to be the final result of considerable sanitization and earth displacement activity."

New ISIS images Friday on its website (http://isis-online.org/) showed a building suspected of housing the explosive experiments covered in pink tarpaulin in what Western diplomats said was an attempt to hide activity from satellites.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's ambassador to the IAEA, has called accusations of a clean-up at Parchin "a childish, ridiculous story made out of nothing."

One Western diplomat told AFP on condition of anonymity on Friday that the IAEA is so frustrated that in its next quarterly report on Iran, expected next week, it may say that going to Parchin now would serve little purpose.

"I would expect language in the report saying 'you are clearly sanitizing, the satellite imagery shows that, and frankly once you let us in, you have done so much it is going to be irrelevant, academic'," the envoy said.

A second Western diplomat told AFP on Saturday that the IAEA saying something along those lines "is certainly something that would make sense, although we don't know definitively how they are going to characterise it in their report."

"We think any value of a visit to Parchin now is greatly diminished," the envoy said on condition of anonymity.

The first diplomat also said that as a result, and after Friday's fruitless meeting, Western nations might table a resolution sharply criticising Tehran at the next IAEA board of governors' meeting starting September 10.

"We are getting nowhere swiftly ... We need to make a more formal and public example of the failure of the sides to engage, which is Iran's fault," he said, adding however it was unclear whether Russia and China would support such a move.

IAEA inspectors visited Parchin twice in 2005 but want to look at it again after new information came to light.

Although analysts say other sites are more significant, the IAEA has zeroed in on Parchin because its information on the site, unlike on others, is its own and not from foreign intelligence services.

Iran has said it will allow monitors access only as part of a wider arrangement governing relations between Iran and the watchdog, which experts and diplomats say would limit to an unacceptable degree the IAEA's inspection rights.

The IAEA report next week is also expected to say that despite the pressure, Tehran is continuing to expand its programme by installing several hundred new centrifuges in its Fordo plant, dug into a mountain so difficult to bomb.

Obama Tells Biden He'd Do it All Over Again

It's nice to get an atta-boy, especially after a tough week, especially from the president, so the tweet from President Barack Obama reaffirming his support for Vice President Joe Biden had to feel good. Biden's been in the hot seat recently after his comment to Virginia voters last week that Republicans and big banks were going to "put y'all back in chains," and with persistent unfounded stories floating?about the White House considering swapping in Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for Obama's re-election running mate, Biden can't have been feeling great about his role in this campaign. To mark the anniversary of his announcement of Biden as running mate, Obama himself (that's what the "-bo" means) tweeted:

Today marks four years since I chose @joebiden to be my running mate. Here?s to an outstanding Vice President and a great friend. ?bo

? Barack Obama (@BarackObama) August 24, 2012

Does it matter that the missive came a couple hours after Biden's own Twitter reminiscing? The vice president had earlier posted this photo of him and Obama making it official:

Four more years: twitter.com/JoeBiden/statu?

? Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) August 23, 2012

Well, whether the president was prompted or not, at least they're still bros.

Oil prices up on hopes for US central bank action

BANGKOK ?

Crude prices rose above $98 per barrel Thursday, with oil markets being driven by hopes that the Federal Reserve is leaning toward action to help the U.S. economy's stalled recovery.

Benchmark crude for October delivery rose 77 cents in midday Bangkok time to $98.03 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 42 cents to finish at $97.26 per barrel in New York on Wednesday.

Brent crude rose $1.01 to $115.92 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Minutes from the Fed's July meeting suggested its members were prepared to take new steps to boost the U.S. economy.

The minutes show that Fed officials spoke with increased urgency about the need to provide more help to the economy unless it improved significantly. But there were no specific details about what steps might be taken or when.

Oil prices have risen about $8 per barrel since Aug. 1, partly on hopes that the U.S., Europe and China would do more to increase growth in their respective economies. Slower growth cuts into the demand for oil and other energy products.

In other futures trading on the Nymex, heating oil rose 1.9 cents to $3.1559 per gallon. Gasoline futures rose 2.7 cents to $2.9654. Natural gas rose 2.6 cents to $2.852 per gallon.

Effective Design of Audio/Video Conference Rooms [Sound and ...

(Sound and Vibration Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Economic pressures, changing business models, and environmental concerns are increasing the use of video conferencing, telepresence, and distance-learning technologies in academic and corporate settings. A successful return on investment for these systems rests on their adoption among prospective users. Acceptance is maximized when the conferencing system provides a realistic virtual presence between users. Acoustics and speech intelligibility are key components of this effect. This article presents an overview of different conferencing technologies, their acoustical requirements, and built-in acoustical controls such as echo-cancellation, noise reduction, and voice lift.

The ultimate intention of any conference system is to facilitate communication between remote participants. This communication can include speech, program audio, video, presentation materials, computer files, and images of physical documents. Many systems are also capable of capturing this content for future viewing. Conference systems employ a variety of technologies in vastly different settings and for vastly different purposes. The ultimate goal is to provide users with the desired level of communication while balancing convenience, cost, flexibility, and fidelity.

Types of Conferencing Systems

Prior to discussing the acoustical requirements for audio and video conferencing facilities, it is necessary to understand the various functions of these rooms and the technologies that are employed. There is a continuum between each of the systems and technologies presented here. Each is scalable from a small single-user system to multiuser applications, including auditoriums and courtrooms. In general, the cost and complexity of each system is directly related to its functionality and the number of participants. Likewise, the need for good acoustics increases along these same lines.

Telephone Conferencing (Teleconferencing). A telephone conference between two endpoints equipped with standard telephone handsets or speakerphones is the simplest form of conferencing. There are also dedicated desktop conferencing systems containing specialized microphones and built-in speakers that can provide an improvement in pickup sensitivity and far-end audio fidelity over standard handsets. If multiline handsets or desktop conferencing systems are used, more than two endpoints can participate in a conference, though overall sensitivity and fidelity of the conference may suffer as more parties are added.

To overcome this, a remote (off site) audio bridging service may be employed. The teleconference host and invited participants typically call into a toll free number and enter a conference access number to join the audio conference. Audio quality is assured by the audio bridging service through its use of sophisticated audio conferencing electronics. Teleconferencing by the use of handsets, desktop conferencing systems, and third-party bridging services comprises a system that is simple to use and does not require the users to possess specialized equipment. A standard teleconference experience may be enhanced through the use of web conferencing software, such as Smart Technologies' Bridgit and Cisco's Webex.

Audio Conferencing. When conferencing audio fidelity is critical or when the number of participants at a conferencing site exceeds the performance capabilities of handset or tabletop conferencing systems, an audio conferencing system with a telephone system interface may be deployed. These high-end audio conferencing systems are similar in function to standard teleconferencing systems but utilize specialized audio conferencing equipment capable of handling many microphones and loudspeakers. This type of system can be quite complex and can incorporate a rackmounted codec (coder-decoder) paired with digital signal processors and specialized microphones. A telephone-hybrid interface provides connectivity between the audio conference system and the telephone system. These systems are often permanently or semipermanently installed in purpose-built conference rooms. Like a standard teleconference system, an audio conference system can be enhanced through the use of web conferencing software, such as Smart Technologies' Bridgit and Cisco's Webex.

Desktop Video Conferencing. Desktop video conferencing is similar to basic telephone conferencing, but it is paired with a simple video feed of a participant's face. Audio and video from each participant are captured using a computer equipped with a simple web camera and possibly a headset microphone. Audio and video signals are typically transmitted over each user's internet connection in conjunction with desktop file-sharing and collaboration software. Other systems may use a video-capable telephone handset to transmit audio and video signals across a corporate local-area network (LAN) or an IP connection. Like telephone conferencing, this method of conferencing requires almost no special equipment, Unlike telephone conferencing, desktop conferencing systems offer more robust communication and almost limitless functionality.

Video Conferencing. Similar to high-end audio conferencing, high-end video conferencing takes place in a purpose-built conference room using a permanently or semipermanently installed system. These systems will generally use multiple microphones, loudspeakers, cameras, displays, and software to transmit audio and video communication between users, Application sharing allows users to share presentations, graphics, videos, electronic white boards, and document cameras. Some systems even allow virtual content creation and editing.

Group video-conferencing is highly desirable, because it allows face-to-face discussion between participants. These face-toface communications allow participants to communicate using body-language as well as speech. The addition of video improves participant relationships and fosters collaboration. In today's global economy, businesses and educators seek to communicate with users throughout the world. Video-conferencing systems facilitate these communications, while eliminating the costs and carbon footprint associated with the travel required for an actual face-to-face meeting.

Currently, the largest impediment to video conferencing is universal adoption of technologies that are sometimes proprietary, meaning users at each endpoint must employ a system from a single manufacturer. Communication between different manufacturers' systems often has limited functionality and fidelity. Important meetings between different systems currently require a test call and may require adjustment of complex system settings. To this end, most video conferencing involves interorganization communications. Too often other communications are not user friendly. A second major barrier is user habit; however, with the advent of Skype, Google Chat, ubiquitous web-cameras, Apple's FaceTime, and cell phones with video conferencing capabilities, upcoming generations of digital natives will not only be comfortable with these technologies, they will demand them.

Realistic Telepresence. Face-to-face meetings are still highly desirable in many business settings. In any critical or sensitive meeting, it is imperative for participants to study body language and other nonverbal cues. While certain meetings are always likely to require face-to-face interaction, improved technologies are slowly chipping away at the need for actual face-to-face meetings. Telepresence systems use cutting-edge technologies to simulate the experience of a face-to-face, in-room meeting with a remote participant.

While there is a continuum between basic video conferencing system and a high-end telepresence system, a robust application will include the several common elements. The primary aim is to create the illusion that users are seated in the same room. All endpoints are outfitted with identical finishes, furniture, lighting, and technology. To users, the remote room looks, sounds, and feels the same as the local room. Furniture, displays, and cameras at each endpoint are arranged so that the video feed of remote participants is situated directly across the table from the local participants. Finally, the illusion of a shared presence is polished off with the capture and transmission of high-definition audio and video to limit aberrations that would draw ones attention to the presence of an artificial communication medium. In the same vein, negative acoustical and lighting effects are sure indicators of an artificial presence and must be tightly controlled.

Lecture Capture. A lecture capture system is another variant or hybrid of the systems described above. Typically employed in a university setting, a basic lecture capture system will capture audio, video, and computer content from an instructor. This feed is subsequently transmitted to students in remote locations or digitally stored for future viewing. High-end systems will use a multi-input conference paired with numerous automated microphones and cameras to capture student questions and discussions in addition to the lecture. Some installations attempt a form of telepresence, with the ultimate goal of facilitating discussions between students in both the local and remote classrooms. In this scenario, each student is outfitted with a microphone and loudspeaker.

Acoustical Design Considerations

Different conference systems provide users with a range of communication options, from simple utilitarian communications to the illusion of life-like, face-to-face meetings. Typically, more critical applications (and expensive installations) demand progressively higher levels of speech intelligibility and have a lower tolerance for intruding background noise. Far from a single set of criteria, the acoustical goals for any conference application begin with a firm understanding of the technology that will be employed and the system's programmatic requirements. Ultimately, the acoustical goal is to ensure that poor acoustics do not impair communication.

Acoustical Design Goals. Basic desktop audio and video conferencing often involves low-importance, impromptu communications undertaken at desks in open and private offices. Participants generally speak and listen through a telephone handset or a headset. The most common acoustical issue in this application is background noise, especially in an open office environment. Users may have difficulty hearing other participants in the presence of both local and remote noise. It is not uncommon to find that at least one participant is located in a noisy open office or calling into the conference from a mobile phone. The quality of the conference bridge is also a key factor to eliminate noise and ensure that all participants are heard at an equal volume.

All remaining types of conference systems employ microphones and speakers placed at some distance from participants. These can include microphones built-into conferencing equipment, goose-neck microphones, table-top microphones, ceiling-mounted microphones, and steerable microphone arrays. Depending on the conferencing application, each microphone may be intended to pick-up one or multiple participants. Remote participants are heard in the conference room via loudspeakers deployed in a similar range of installations. The coverage pattern and placement of these loudspeakers must be carefully coordinated with the microphone locations in the room to avoid creating an audio feedback loop.

As soon as distant microphones and speakers are employed, room acoustics begin to impact the fidelity of the system. Specifically, background noise and unwanted acoustical reflections can degrade speech intelligibility. Unlike the human ear, a microphone cannot use spatial cues to perceptually separate speech from unwanted background noise; both speech and noise are transmitted to remote users at an equal level. Conference systems employ various techniques to control this noise; however, it is always prudent to employ passive acoustical controls to reduce reliance on these systems.

It is important to remember that participants are presumably listening for half of any conference. Nearly all of the sophisticated noise control technologies that are employed today can only treat the effects of poor acoustical conditions from the room where speech originates. These technologies cannot eliminate the effects of poor acoustics in the receiving room. At a minimum, each conference room should maintain acoustical conditions that are appropriate for face-to-face communication; however, use of loudspeakers and microphones typically demands slightly better conditions.

Finish Treatment. In most conference rooms, an absorptive ceiling is more than sufficient to control reverberation time. To this end, additional acoustical treatments in conference rooms are rarely aimed at reverberation control. Rather, they are selected to control specular reflections and the build-up of low-frequency modal energy. In practice, these aims often result in the application of functional, tackable acoustical panels around the perimeter of the room and possibly some type of low-frequency absorber.

Sound Isolation. Because microphones are more sensitive to interference from noise (see above), it is important to provide a slightly higher level of sound isolation than what might be typically needed for a passive conference room. In practice, a mid-level video conference room may be surrounded by full-height walls, constructed with multiple layers of drywall and batt insulation. MEP penetrations in these walls, such as transfer air ducts and receptacles, must be identified and treated. While an entry vestibule is preferred, entry doors are typically a solid, fire-core type outfitted with acoustical seals.

Video conference rooms are often featured spaces in a building, surrounded by storefront glazing or frameless glass and doors. Where these conditions can't be avoided, a laminated insulated glazing unit is often set in a heavy-gauge, store-front frame that is outfitted with neoprene gaskets and filled with mineral fiber insulation.

Desktop video and audio conference applications, which use close micing techniques, rarely require additional sound isolation beyond what is considered good practice for private and open office environments. On the other end of the spectrum, the envelope of high-end telepresence rooms may begin to approach that of a low-grade audio or video studio.

Mechanical System Noise Control. It is generally advisable to seek a background noise level that is 5-10 NC points below standard guidelines for similar passive conference rooms. This is particularly true for conference rooms that use ceiling-mounted microphones placed close to HVAC diffusers. Similar to sound isolation requirements, desktop conferencing doesn't necessarily demand a quieter HVAC system, while high-end teleconferencing installations warrant an extremely quiet HVAC system.

The duct system serving a basic audio/video conference room must maintain low airflow velocities and avoid turbulent layouts and transitions. Terminal units must be located outside of the room and powered units may require duct silencers. Finally, diffusers and grilles must generate low noise levels and be located far from ceiling microphones.

Built-in Conferencing System Enhancements. As mentioned above, audio conferencing systems employ a variety of sophisticated noise control techniques to limit the effects of poor conference room acoustics. The manufacturers' intentions are to make their systems work in the maximum number of environments, not just expensive purpose-built conference rooms.

Note that as the noise reduction algorithms apply filters, gates, and cancellation techniques to eliminate noise, the speech signal is inevitably affected. As acoustical conditions in the conference room worsen, the speech signal is subjected to greater and greater levels of noise reduction until speech intelligibility is eventually degraded. At their extreme settings, noise reduction algorithms may break down with unpredictable results.

Finally, it must be restated that these electronic control measures can only affect the speech signal until it enters the receiver room. They cannot eliminate the effects of poor acoustics in the receiving room.

Noise Reduction. Noise reduction algorithms use software to identify and eliminate background noise. These algorithms typically identify wanted speech by its patteras, envelope, and frequency. They are very effective at identifying a steady-state hum or hiss from a mechanical system as unwanted noise; however, they are unable to identify occupant noises (shuffling papers and chairs) or speech from an adjacent room as noise.

Automatic Gain Control. Most audio conferencing devices use automatic gain control to keep the speech at a constant loudness, despite level fluctuations that may occur while a talker is speaking. To function properly, the talker's voice must have a suitable signal-to-noise ratio. If the background noise in a room becomes too loud, the automatic gain control will respond to the background noise instead of a quiet talker.

Echo Cancellation. Echo cancellation refers to algorithms that are employed to eliminate two forms of "echo." The first form is the familiar acoustical type that affects a talker's voice in the source room as reverberation, slap echo, and unwanted specular reflections. Echo-cancellation algorithms may emit and record a test signal in each endpoint at set-up to identify the acoustical signature of each room so that it may later be removed from the transmitted speech signal.

The second type of echo occurs when a talker's voice is emitted from loudspeakers at a remote site, recaptured by the microphones in that room, and retransmitted back to the original talker. This condition results in a considerably pronounced and delayed echo. Echo-cancellation algorithms will employ a variety of gates and noise cancellation techniques to eliminate this form of echo.

Voice Lift. Employing multiple microphones in a conference room inevitably increases the amount of room and occupant noise that is captured by the system. An extreme example would be a distance-learning classroom where every student or pair of students is outfitted with a table-top microphone and loudspeaker. The combined noise from all of these microphones is obviously undesirable and should not be transmitted to remote users. A voice-lift system mutes the signal from each microphone until it receives a signal from a physical push-to-talk button or perceives speech above a preset threshold. A truly intelligent voice-lift system will not only transmit a student's voice to a remote classroom, it will also send the signal to every other student's personal loudspeaker within the local classroom. The level of speech sent to each loudspeaker can even vary based on its physical distance from the talker. These same devices can also be connected to automated pan-tilt-zoom cameras and microphone arrays, which focus the systems attention to a specific talker.

Microphone Techniques. Designers of conferencing systems will use a number of different microphone techniques depending on the application, functionality, and budget for each system. Acoustical designers must understand the ratio of microphones to talkers in each conferencing application. Some applications will use a single, distant, omnidirectional microphone to pick-up the voices of all talkers in a room. This configuration is simple and cost effective but introduces the room's acoustical environment into the transmitted signal. Other applications will use a single directional microphone for each talker, often in the form of a table-top or lapel microphone. This configuration passively rejects much of the room's acoustical environment from the transmitted conference signal.

Other Design Considerations. Conceptual acoustic designs for video and audio conference rooms and even telepresence rooms are fairly simple. However, one of the biggest challenges is to deploy and coordinate acoustical treatments with other functional and architectural requirements.

Furniture and Conferencing Equipment. Most conference rooms are filled with fixed or flexible seating, either at a conference table or, in the case of a distance-learning classroom, in rows. Telepresence rooms will often include "half" of a conference table terminating into a display showing remote participants. It is important for the acoustical designer to understand the orientation of each talker (and loudspeaker) in relation to the room's microphones. For instance, talkers may be speaking into fixed table-top microphones, or the placement may be flexible and change from day to day. Voices may be captured by a distant ceiling-mounted, omnidirectional microphone susceptible to noise from the HVAC system or footfalls on the floor above.

Further, the room's wall surfaces are quite often taken up by large displays, electronic white boards, and credenzas. If acoustical wall treatments are deemed necessary, they must be incorporated into these elements or deployed between them.

Aesthetics. Perceptually, the conference system needs to remain transparent to facilitate effortless communication between remote participants. Like acoustical disruptions, visual distractions can quickly degrade this transparency. Any acoustical finish treatments in view of the room's cameras must have a neutral finish. Bright colors, complex patterns, and bold textures are to be avoided. Horizontal and vertical slats or grooves should be avoided or covered with a neutral acoustical fabric to avoid moir? patterns on video images.

Lighting. Conference room designers will go to great lengths to control lighting conditions in video conferencing facilities. Whenever practical, black-out drapes are used to eliminate outdoor light. Participants are instead lit using dedicated video lighting with a specific color temperature to give subjects a bright and natural appearance.

Conference rooms are frequently designed with one long wall consisting entirely of an exterior glazing and an opposing corridor wall made up entirely of interior store-front glazing. To address lighting concerns, the glass surfaces are simply outfitted with blackout drapes that are automatically deployed when the conferencing system is in use. Unfortunately, these black-out drapes are acoustically transparent. They do nothing to address the acoustical issues posed by two opposing glass walls or the poor sound isolation capabilities of glass.

A secondary set of heavy fabric drapes can offer some acoustical control for these surfaces; however, it is important to remember that they are usually deployed only when the conferencing system is in use. Even a well used video conferencing room will serve as a basic, passive conference room from much of its life, and the drapes will not be deployed in this scenario. If used, these drapes should be automatically deployed by the room's control system to avoid reliance on users who may not understand their purpose. Another promising treatment is the permanent installation of clear polycarbonate absorbers over the room's glass surfaces.

This situation is more common in mid-level video conferencing facilities. High-end telepresence rooms are generally seen as purpose-built environments, and it is easier to make the case to eliminate glass walls entirely.

Equipment Noise. Depending on its complexity, the electronic equipment used in a conference room may generate quite a bit of noise. While a simple table top teleconference device will generate almost no noise, more complex systems may include video projectors, computers, amplifiers, and other equipment outfitted with noisy cooling fans. The ideal approach is to place this noisy equipment in an isolated equipment closet or enclosure and run the equipment remotely using a control system. Rear-projection rooms, where used, offer an excellent place to house noisy equipment; however, the acoustical designer should study the construction of the rear-projection screen and any loudspeaker alcoves to gauge how much equipment noise these elements will allow into the conference room.

Outgoing Sound Isolation. Video conference rooms are typically designed to provide a rich, multi-media playback from multiple audio and video sources. It is not uncommon to use these systems to view a multimedia presentation that includes loud music, effects, and speech. Without proper treatment, the noise produced in a typical video-conferencing room has the potential to seriously disrupt occupants of nearby spaces.

Material Durability. Conference rooms, by their definition, are public spaces where groups of people gather to converse and collaborate, To this end, they may see high levels of traffic, especially in distance-learning classrooms. Acoustical treatments, from finishes to door seals, must maintain an appropriate durability for public: use.

Case Study

The Sextant Group was recently involved in the design of a corporate conference room that was outfitted with HP's Halo telepresence video conferencing system. The room was located on the 29th floor of a high-rise building in an urban area. Despite using telepresence-grade technology, this application did not seek to provide life-like, across-the-table video conferencing. Instead, the room contained a traditional conference table in the center of the room and a rear-projection screen on one wall to display remote participants and content.

To optimize the performance of their telepresence system, HP recommends specific acoustical criteria for conferencing rooms that will house their system. Specifically, HP recommends a sound transmission class (STC) of 50-55 for walls surrounding the room, an ambient noise level below 32-34 dBA, and reverberation time below 0.8 seconds at 1,000 Hz. These criteria were considered in conjunction with the acoustical design goals described previously.

The walls surrounding the conference room were constructed using two layers of 5/8-inch-thick gypsum wallboard on both sides of metal studs and batt insulation in the stud cavity. The walls extended from the floor slab to the deck above and were carefully sealed with a nonhardening sound caulk. A separate corridor with a waiting room was built outside of the conference room to provide an acoustical buffer zone. In addition, the conference room used solid-core wood doors outfitted with full-perimeter seals and a threshold.

A major sound isolation challenge was the presence of a glass curtain wall along the room's exterior wall. In general, this condition had an adverse affect on the quality of the video image and provided limited acoustical separation from exterior noise sources. In this particular application, however, traffic noise was less of a concern, because the conference room was located on the building's 29th floor. A more significant concern was obtaining a good seal between the conference room's interior partitions and the mullions in the curtain wall. This intersection detail was carefully studied and enhanced to maintain an appropriate level of isolation between the conference room and adjacent spaces.

The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system presented the primary source of background noise in the room. To maintain an appropriately quiet background noise level, VAV (variable air volume) boxes and large main ducts passing over the space were relocated to an adjacent space. In the remaining duct work, airflow velocities were kept to a minimum, and smooth transitions were provided to reduce turbulence and air flow noise.

Noise from video projectors, amplifiers, and equipment racks in the adjacent rear projection room also presented a significant noise concern. Equipment noise levels were analyzed to determine how much noise reduction had to be achieved between the two spaces. A half-inch-thick, glass, rear-projection screen was ultimately the limiting factor for noise reduction between the spaces. Seals between the rear-projection screen and the surrounding wall were selected to minimize sound transmission.

Controlling reverberation within the space was also a challenge. Three of the walls were scheduled to contain mostly hard, acoustically reflective surfaces. The south wall was comprised entirely of the exterior curtain wall; the west wall contained the room's rear projection screen; and the north wall was outfitted with two large writing surfaces. As such, the ceiling provided the best opportunity to introduce acoustical absorption into the room, so acoustical ceiling tiles were used for the majority of the ceiling. Fabric-wrapped acoustical panels were also placed on the available wall surfaces in the room.

Reviewing architectural documentation ensured that the conference room would be capable of meeting HP's acoustical requirements. Achieving these requirements in the field took careful coordination between the design and construction teams.
