Twitter announced a new set of tools and features aimed at making it easier for small businesses to promote themselves using its service.
Partnering with American Express, Twitter will offer a self-serve platform that lets small businesses purchase Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts.
Twitter and American Express have piloted the program in a limited release since November. Starting in late March, the offering will be available to all.
According to Ad Age, the promoted offerings will be set up in auction format, similar to how Google Adsense works.
?Small businesses can bid for promoted accounts on a cost-per-follower basis and for promoted tweets on a cost-per-engagement basis,? according to Ad Age.
Basing pricing of promoted tweets on a cost-per-engagement model means small businesses will only have to pay if users engage with the Tweet?for example, retweeting or clicking on the link.
Twitter seems to be tooling the small-business offering toward niche terms and local markets. In other words, small businesses can target their communities with promoted tweets and will therefore not be competing with national brands, who tend to target broader swaths of the country.
For Twitter, the offering will tap into a highly scalable market. Setting the service up in electronic auction format means that it will be easily accessible for small businesses, where before promoted tweets often involved
Starting today, American Express users can register to participate in the initial introduction of the program via this link.
If yours is among the first 10,000 eligible small businesses you will get $100 free toward your first campaign for signing up.
