Paris Review Interviews Available on App - Southern Bookman

As a crew of excellent workers repaired a sink and a leak in an upstairs bathroom, I read Paris Review interviews via the venerated journal's app, downloaded for free on the Ipad.

The workers banged, painted and caulked and ran machines while I read interviews with poets Anthony Hecht and John Hollander. Hollander in 1992 at the Sewanee Writers' Conference, where he was a late sub for the mortally ill Howard Nemerov, bracingly criticized my poems.

I was interested in how in the PR interview he dismissed the value of poetry-writing workshops, because he enthusiastically led such workshops at Sewanee. I found him a warm and kind man.

My poetry career also included a near brush with Hecht. I was to attend a workshop he led at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, but decided to pull out. Soon afterward, Hecht died.

The Paris Review app offers a broad selection of the journal's celebrated interviews, along with back issues and books for purchase and daily news. Speaking of apps, I am writing this on my portable Ipad keyboard, publishing through the TypePad's rather basic app.

I believe in waiting until marriage for sex. However - LesBePure

Question: I believe in waiting until marriage for sex. However after accepting the fact that I am a lesbian it?s raised a question for me. I live in Australia where same sex marriage is not legislised nor recognised by our government and I?m just wondering what that would mean for my future partner and I down the road?

This is a question I have pondered many times myself.? I happen to live in a Country where same sex marriage is legal and recognized.? Yet, I still had the same question in regards to each of my relationships.? How could I walk in purity before the Lord and know the boundaries when being with my girlfriend as they don?t seem to be as black and white as they may be with opposite sex.

I think for each couple it is different.? We need to ask God what He is speaking to our lives, to our relationship and allow Him to guide us in that.? Like you, I believe in waiting until marriage, so what constitutes a marriage?? Is it a piece of paper from the government or is it a vow, a serious oath, a covenant between two people before God?? I think the Holy Spirit will come along side us when we invite Him into our relationships and will help us make those boundaries in our intimacy that are needed.? It is hard to define the line in which not to cross, I think it is something both women can agree on together and then abide by it.? It won?t always be easy.? Try to avoid those things that excite and stir desires and wants that can?t be righteously satisfied.? God will show you what those things are.

I wish there was a black and white answer on it.? When I read the Word I see that we are to desire purity, chase after righteousness, be holy, etc.? What does that look like in each of our lives?? I think it looks different in each person.? We can?t evaluate what might be wrong for one may be right for another, we are simply in different places in our lives and God is dealing with different areas.

Abba, I pray that You would draw us closer to You.? You know our desire to live pure and righteous lives before You.? Our desire to have You as the center of our relationships.? I pray that You will speak clearly to our hearts and show us Your boundaries in our intimacies.? Give us strength and wisdom to honour those boundaries and allow Your blessing to fall on our love because of the obedience.? Have Your way Lord, let Your will be done.? Holy Spirit, would You please come and speak clearly to our hearts.? Be glorified, in Jesus? name.

How Important Is Class Size? Ctd - The Dish | By Andrew Sullivan ...

A reader writes:

Regarding your post from Dana Goldstein, I would venture to say that using average class size is not a good statistic to determine what the typical teacher encounters. Rather, median class size should be the appropriate metric. Given the legal requirement that certain students receive IEPs (Individual Educational Program), there is a natural requirement to hire more teachers for specialty classes such as special ed and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). As a result, you have more teachers relative to the growth of the student population, but you still have many classrooms with 30 or more students. For classrooms where special help is needed, you can have fewer than 10 students. Thus, average class size becomes skewed.

Another:

Regarding?class?size in Korea and Japan: yes, they get better results on standardized testing and they have larger?class?sizes than the US, but I would not read too much into that. Most kids in Korea and Japan get a LOT of additional?classes?outside of school in private institutes, with parents pushing them incredibly hard. I've never heard anyone from that system speak well of it (including my wife, who managed to survive a Korean high school and made it into one of Korea's best universities). There's a reason a huge chunk of Korea flees for their high school years, desperate for just about any other system.

Another adds, "I've worked in Japanese schools, and they make their?classes?big on purpose to encourage interaction with as diverse a variety of peers as possible." Readers are also discussing the subject on our Facebook page:

My kids (now in their early 20s) had class sizes of no more than 25 until fourth grade, when it hit 35. That was terrible! I volunteered once a week in their classrooms and was active with PTA, so I was at the school a lot. A few of the 4th-8th grade teachers could handle 32+ kids, but most could not. I definitely feel ALL the kids were short-changed - those who needed extra time / attention couldn't get it, those who needed to advance more quickly were bored, and those who were dealing with personal problems (parent divorce, etc.) could not be given the support they needed. Most excellent private schools limit class sizes to under 20.

I will also add that I teach university courses, and in the last few years my cap sizes have gone from 30 to 35 to as many as EIGHTY - in 400-level classes. This means NO writing assignments and nearly all multiple choice questions on tests. I find this to be appalling. (I teach at a large state university.) The same is true for elementary and high-school teachers - the larger the class, the less demanding the assignments have to be (and fewer of them). That is not education.

Hurricane Sandy as the October election surprise?

As Hurricane Sandy heads toward land on the East Coast, the storm and its aftermath could lend an interesting twist to the upcoming general election?call it the ?October surprise??as some power outages could last into Election Day.

sandyHurricane Sandy?s track is projected to directly affect two swing states in the election?Pennsylvania and Virginia?with Ohio also in the storm?s path inward.

The storm will arrive about a week before Election Day, and widespread, long-term power outages are a possibility, based on recent trends and the severity of the storm.

With President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on center stage next week, the storm?s aftermath could affect voting logistics, travel, and even the volume of campaign TV advertising.

The concept of the October surprise in presidential elections dates back to the 1968 campaign, when President Lyndon Johnson stopped bombing in the Vietnam War as a way to help Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey.

Ronald Reagan also worried about a late surprise in the 1980 election, when there were rumors that President Jimmy Carter was working to free hostages in Iran just days before the election.

Recent Constitution Daily Stories

Yoga in public schools latest test of free speech
Romney?s ace could come from a mystery swing state

However, a major weather event as the October surprise just a week before the contest between President Obama and Mitt Romney would be unique, and it shouldn?t be discounted.

Hurricane Sandy is now off the Atlantic Coast and heading up from Florida toward the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Meteorologists say over the weekend, Sandy will meet up with another storm and then make a sharp-left turn into a coastal region starting on Monday.

The center of the storm?s projected path is southern New Jersey, but its eye could make landfall in an area between Virginia and Connecticut.

The storm is so wide that it will likely bring severe conditions to an area inhabited by 66 million people, including parts of North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, New York, and Connecticut.

These regions will see heavy rains and high winds, and areas in the northwest track of the storm may see snow.? It all adds up to a recipe for massive power outages, storm damage, and flooding.

On his blog, AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions vice president Michael Smith says widespread power outages are very likely possible.

?Because of the geographic extent (winds capable of causing power failures in a swath hundreds of miles in width), there could be massive power failures and, once out, the power may be out for weeks,? Smith.

In August 2011, Hurricane Irene left millions of utility customers without power at some point. Half of those power outages were in Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The Department of Energy says the peak number of power outages during Hurricane Irene was about 5.9 million on the night of August 28, with about 3 million outages in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Five days later, about 580,000 people were still without power.

So in October 2012, Hurricane Sandy won?t make an exit until November 1, leaving power crews about five or six days to get people back on the grid, including polling places, public buildings and residences.

Two states that depend heavily on electronic voting are Pennsylvania and Virginia. They also don?t have early voting.

Ohio will also be affected by Hurricane Sandy and some meteorologists are forecasting snow for parts of eastern Ohio.

On Thursday, the Christian Science Monitor reported there were already concerns about the electronic voting systems in Virginia and Pennsylvania before Hurricane Sandy became an issue.

?In four key battleground states?Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and Colorado?glitches in e-voting machines could produce incorrect or incomplete tallies that would be difficult to detect and all but impossible to correct because the machines have no paper record for officials to go back and check,? the Monitor said in its exclusive report.

The newspaper said in Pennsylvania, 50 of 68 counties use paperless voting systems, while in Virginia, 127 of 135 counties use paperless systems. And those electronic systems need electricity to operate.

In addition to potential voting machine problems, the fallout from storm damage and prolonged power outages could keep some people from the polls.

And in an ironic twist, television stations that broadcast to the Virginia market and even in Ohio might have a much greater chance to run more political advertisements on TV.

Local TV stations usually switch wall-to-wall storm coverage during big weather events, often pre-empting national TV programming. That would give stations more ad spots to run for candidates, in a more-high profile position?and at a much-higher cost.

The major impact of the storm will also give President Obama and Mitt Romney chances to act presidential in public.

There?s always a chance that Hurricane Sandy could be a dud, but that seems highly unlikely. The two major weather models used by forecasters agree the Sandy will make that left turn and run into the East Coast at some point.

Official forecasters also say there is a 90 percent chance that Hurricane Sandy will hit the East Coast.

Scott Bomboy is the editor-in-chief of the National Constitution Center.

Texas troubles weigh on chemicals firm BASF in Q3

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? BASF SE saw third-quarter profits fall 21 percent as its chemicals business suffered from lower demand, as well as from troubles at a key Texas facility.

However, stronger oil sales helped soften the blow, now that the company's facilities in Libya are working again after being shut down last year during the civil war.

The company said Thursday that net profit fell to ?946 million ($1.23 billion) from ?1.19 billion in the same quarter a year ago. Sales rose 8 percent to ?19.0 billion.

Its chemicals division faced lower prices for its products in a slowing global economy, meaning less profit despite increasing sales. It also had to deal with unexpected shutdowns for technical reasons at the division's steam cracker in Port Arthur, Texas, a facility that makes products derived from oil.

The company's chemicals division saw operating earnings fall 25 percent to ?633 million. Sales rose, but profits fell due to a 9 percent decline in prices. In its petrochemicals division the company saw "lower margins across almost all product lines." It foresaw no pickup in the fourth quarter, either.

BASF, based in Ludwigshafen, Germany, maintained its profit outlook for the rest of the year but cut its prediction for global growth. BASF has a good view of the global economy since it sells chemicals and plastics that are raw materials for a wide range of industries, including cars, construction, textiles, and electronics.

The company says the world economy will grow 2.2 percent this year instead of its earlier forecast of 2.3 percent and that industrial production will grow 2.8 percent instead of 3.4 percent.

"In the past quarter, the outlook for the world economy has once again not improved and the uncertainty on the international capital markets continues," CEO Kurt Bock said.

Bock said growth slowed in the quarter in China, a key driver of the global economy, and that the company sees "stabilization at the current level in China, but no visible upturn."

Lost in Translation? Civil Society, Faith-Based Organizations and the Negotiation of International Norms

The impact of civil society on transitional justice is complex in part because civil society is composed of a multitude of actors, faith-based and secular, whose preferences for accountability and truth reflect their varying interests and beliefs about justice. Transnational faith-based and secular actors have played a central role in mobilizing support for liberal-legal strategies designed to hold perpetrators of mass atrocities accountable. Local faith-based actors have been resilient to pressure for conformity and have instead played a pivotal role in adapting international accountability norms and embedding them in local practices?

Obama Does Vegas With Katy Perry and Trip to Bellagio

LAS VEGAS - Pop star Katy Perry and 13,000 Nevadans rocked together for President Obama under the stars at a midnight ET rally here to close out the first day of Obama's whirlwind two-day campaign blitz.

Perry, wearing a skin-tight, white dress designed as a ballot, urged the crowd to vote for Obama - and vote early. She sang a full set of her hits, complete with back-up dancers, full concert lighting and a digital backdrop that showcased pictures of Obama and his slogan "Forward."

Obama hailed Perry has "just a wonderful young lady" and said at the top of his remarks that he had the honor of meeting her grandmother backstage - and that she got some of her lipstick on him.

"Fortunately somebody wiped it off before Michelle saw it," Obama said with a big grin.

Perry's grandmother, who is 91 years old, watched Obama's remarks from a chair in the middle of the concert stage as the singer stood nearby. ABC News asked her about the kiss backstage after the event and she said it was "wonderful."

The Vegas stop was the fourth of the day for Obama, who is on a 48-hour, 4500-mile campaign tour through eight states.

"We are pulling an all-nighter. No sleep. And if you're not gonna sleep, you might as well be in Vegas," Obama said.

After the event on his way to the airport, the president made an surprise visit to the Bellagio Hotel, where he greeted hundreds of hotel and casino workers crowded inside.

"Everyone here knows what it means to work hard," he told them. "You're what makes Las Vegas run. You're what makes the strip run."

"I need you guys to go out and vote now. Don't wait to vote," Obama added. "You gotta go cash in your chips now."

The president flies overnight - sleeping on Air Force One - to Tampa, Fla., where he holds an event Thursday morning.

Amazon Studios at AFF | A ton of useful information about ...

Amazon Studios has been a much-discussed topic on both the blog and the podcast. Last week at the Austin Film Festival, the company made a presentation explaining how they work with screenwriters.

Reader Mike attended and took notes, which he generously offered to write up.

first personA little bit about my background: I started out working at a production company as an intern and as a reader, kept working at writing and eventually got representation from a manager and an agent. I?ve had scripts go out and I?ve done the studio water bottle tour a couple of times, but have yet to earn a single penny as a writer.

I consider myself in that grey, ugly pool of zombie writers: Part alive, but mostly dead inside.

I?m guessing the crowd ranged from people like me to those who are thinking about writing their first screenplays. I had heard a lot things about Amazon (including on the podcast), so I went in with an ass-load of skepticism along with a tiny bit of hope. Unfortunately, very little during the panel moved the skeptic needle, and it pretty much pissed all over the hope.

Again, I can only speak for myself.

First, it wasn?t really a panel. There was one Dude at a podium, so it was more like a new-hire presentation at Dundler Mifflin rather than a Q&A with a studio exec. The Dude, head of development at Amazon Studios I think, seemed nice enough and intelligent enough, but he used the phrase ?I?d rather not get into the details of that? way too often for my tastes.

Bullet points:

  • Writers can upload their scripts to the Amazon Studios site as a non-WGA writer, or if they are WGA they can have their rep upload.
  • Once a writer uploads his script, he cannot sell his script to anyone for 45 days. Essentially a free 45-day option.
  • If Amazon is interested, they will option the script for a period of 18 months for $10k.
  • If that script goes into production, the writer will be paid $200k, with some other pay-outs if the film reaches certain financial milestones.
  • They also have open writing assignments from time to time, and these are handled much the same way, with writers submitting their work on the website for consideration for the gig.

All of this is well and good on the surface. I am not a million-dollar-screenwriter by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have some access to the lords of Hollywood. If I didn?t have anywhere to go with my scripts, I would probably be interested in what the Dude had to say. However, once he said they have somewhere around 10,000 submissions with 22 projects in development, it doesn?t take a Harvard grad to do the math and realize your odds are just as good in the traditional studio system.

The things that I found puzzling were mainly around their development process and their overall plan.

The Dude explained their development process by talking about information studios gather from test screening and how it is used. Basically saying that once you shoot a film, you have a test screening and get feedback from the general public on what they liked and didn?t like about the story, the characters or whatever. Meaning that the problem is that the film is already shot, so there is only so much you can do to alter it.

At Amazon (wait for it) they want to get public feedback (through their website) on the script as it is being developed so they can make changes before they begin shooting. They plan on doing this through several methods. They already have comic books made from a script in development that they are asking for feedback on. They are also thinking of making short videos and other things to get parts of the script out there and gather opinions from Amazon?s customers. The writer will get this info and incorporate it as notes for rewrites. Now, the Dude did say it is up to the writer to do what he wants with these notes. You be the judge on that. On one hand, I?d like to congratulate them on thinking outside the box on development. But I see problems with this, as I?m sure you do as well.

The other problem I had was with their overall plan: There doesn?t seem to be one.

They have a first-look deal with Warner Bros., but when he was asked questions about the deal he defaulted to the ?I?d rather not get into the details of that.? He was asked what type of genres or budget ranges they were looking at, and he didn?t really have an answer. I would have been more impressed if they picked a direction, like saying, ?We want to provide funding for small, independent minded stories that might not get a shot in the Hollywood system,? or saying, ?We are looking for big, tent-pole, event movies.?

I had other concerns, but that was pretty much the thing in a nutshell. I think it great that someone with money is jumping in, and I hope for the best, but it looks like there are problems with hair on them, and I think there are some very rough growing pains in the making.

Gaza militant killed after heavy rocket fire on Israel

Asked if Israel was considering a ground operation in the Palestinian territory, Ehud Barak told Army Radio that "if we have no choice and the fire will continue, then they clearly will be hit harder and nothing is out of the question".

Much of the fighting has been between Israel and smaller militant groups. But the military wing of Gaza's Hamas rulers and a smaller militant group claimed credit for the rocket and mortar fire Wednesday.

In a statement, Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committees said "these holy missions come in response to the repeated, continuous crimes of the enemy against our people, which killed four and injured 10 in the past 48 hours."

The barrage from Gaza came just hours after Qatar's ruler accorded Hamas unprecedented political recognition by becoming the first head of state to visit the largely shunned Palestinian territory on Tuesday.

The emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, also promised his oil-rich country would invest hundreds of millions of dollars in construction projects, something that would help to revive flagging popular support for Hamas by generating thousands of jobs in the destitute territory of 1.6 million people.

Israel's border with Gaza has been largely quiet since a major Israeli offensive four years ago, but violence has flared sporadically since.

Despite the recent flare-up, neither side appeared interested in a renewal of large-scale hostilities, and Hamas has largely stayed out of direct confrontation with Israel since the 2009 war. But it is also under pressure from various militant groups, including al-Qaida-inspired Salafis active in Gaza, to prove it remains in confrontation with Israel, whose existence it rejects.

No Comments - Mental Health Association of Portland

David Corey

For 13 years, the city of Portland has awarded a Lake Oswego man a contract to conduct psychological exams of prospective Portland police hires and to gauge whether officers who have been involved in shootings and other major events are fit to return to duty.

With little or no discussion, the City Council has granted or extended psychologist David M. Corey?s contract nine times and paid him close to half a million dollars.

The city sought competitive bids for the contract three times: in 1999, when Corey was first picked to develop and conduct psychological tests; in 2003 when the contract was extended; and this year, after a decade of contract extensions with no bids sought.

When the city did open the contract to competitive bidding this year, it was riddled with controversy.

While Corey is highly regarded nationally and there?s been no specific problems cited with Corey?s work, members of the city?s minority communities say they object to his ?monopoly? on the police bureau contract. They argue Corey has failed to weed out some officers with a propensity for violence, pointing to last month?s U.S. Department of Justice finding that Portland police use excessive force against people with mental illness.

Mayor Sam Adams, the police commissioner, recently backed away from awarding a new five-year contract to Corey. He acknowledged the city could have done more to draw a broader pool of bidders.

?I think the criticism was fair,? the mayor said, adding, ?The fact that the contract has been with one person for so long is worth reviewing.

Critics have urged the city to find psychologists from diverse backgrounds.

?The city is only getting this one white guy from Lake Oswego?s point of view,? said Dan Handelman of Portland Copwatch.

Corey, president of the American Board of Police & Public Safety Psychology, said the concerns are not off base. The community?s call for a multi-cultural group of psychologists to help determine police candidates? suitability for the job ?warrants serious consideration? by the city, he said.

?How the Portland Police Bureau selects its police officers should reflect the needs and interests of the broader community,? Corey wrote in an e-mail to The Oregonian.

?We look forward to reviewing the city?s new specifications for the services and to preparing a responsive proposal.?

Corey added, ?My firm has had no role in determining the frequency of these competitive bids over the past 13 years.?

???

In 1999, the bureau for the first time sought a psychologist to develop and conduct evaluations for police candidates and fitness-for-duty evaluations of sworn officers when there?s a concern about their ability to perform their job. Three psychologists submitted bids, and Corey?s was lowest. His rate then: $325 per applicant; $150 per hour for fitness-for-duty tests.

A police captain, a lieutenant, an acting sergeant, and a police human resources analyst were on the selection committee. The city wanted a vendor to assess police candidates? emotional control, sensitivity, moral-ethical behavior, and ?ability to appropriately employ force under extreme stress.?

In subsequent years, the City Council voted eight times to extend Corey?s contract. Often, police bureau officials told council members that an emergency existed, allowing the city to bypass competitive bidding. The emergency, the bureau said, was that officer recruitment and fitness-for-duty evaluations needed to continue ?without disruption.?

In July 2009, the city also awarded Corey a $150,000 five-year contract to conduct psychological exams on prospective emergency dispatchers, without seeking competitive bids. The Bureau of Emergency Communications cited an exemption from city procurement rules that allows no-bid contracting when determining ?any prospective or current City employee?s ability to work or return to work.?

Most recently, on Feb. 2, Police Chief Mike Reese tried to extend Corey?s contract with the police bureau through March. Reese told the council no public involvement was sought ?because it pertains to internal city government services provided by Dr. Corey,? as approved by a 2004 contract.

Sean Murray, the police bureau?s personnel manager, defended Corey?s work. ?The bureau has been pleased with Dr. Corey?s service,? Murray said. ?Dr. Corey?s process has not had any adverse impact on protected-status groups.?

???

According to Corey, his psychological exams disqualify 32.2 percent of Portland police candidates. Candidates of color are not at a disadvantage, Corey told a community group in 2010. His data showed some disparities for Native American candidates, but Corey said last week the current pass rate for the Native American applicants shows no ?significant disparity.?

He said the?pre-employment psychological evaluation for police applicants consists of a lengthy series of questions. The pre-offer phase consists of 614 questions. A post-offer evaluation consists of 992 questions. There is also a face-to-face interview as a part of the psychological evaluation.

Community activists became concerned about police psychological exams after a Portland police officer?s controversial 2010 shooting of an unarmed black man. Leaders of the Albina Ministerial Alliance and Portland Copwatch urged the mayor and chief to reach out to diverse communities to broaden the pool of psychologists available.

When the city this year asked for bids, it received only two: from Corey, and another psychologist.

This time, Corey was chosen by a selection committee that consisted of: the mayor?s public safety aide; the police bureau?s internal affairs captain; a retired African-American police lieutenant who works security in City Hall; and two citizen members of the minority community, one from the Albina Ministerial Alliance.

Each was given a draft of the city?s bid request and asked to offer any suggested changes. One community member questioned whether it was a conflict of interest for the same psychologist to perform initial screenings of applicants and fitness-for-duty exams of current officers.

Corey, in an interview, said finding a person psychologically fit at one time doesn?t preclude finding the person unfit later.

By Feb. 26,, the council was poised to extend Corey?s contract for five years. The ordinance was on the council?s consent agenda, meaning there would be no council discussion or public comment.

But community activists raised strong objections.

???

Pastor T. Allen Bethel, chair of the Albina Ministerial Alliance, was disturbed there were only two bidders. He said alliance members would have alerted prospective psychologists if they had known bidding had started.

?We notice that Dr. Corey has had this contract for over 10 years,? Bethel told the council.

The mayor backed off and proposed extending the contract for six months through the end of August, which the council approved.

In September, another emergency ordinance went before the council. The bureau asked to extend Corey?s contract through Oct. 31, adding $20,000 to cover additional police psychological testing. Murray told commissioners that there were ?outstanding invoices to be paid? because the bureau had hired more officers. If the money wasn?t approved, the bureau couldn?t hire the recruits, Murray said.

Teresa Roberts, a citizen, addressed the council. ?I don?t understand the fast-tracking of crucial considerations like this,? Roberts said. ?In this economy, with so many people looking for jobs, to have only two qualified applicants ? it doesn?t make sense. It does not engender trust.?

Before awarding a long-term contract, Adams promised that the city would develop a new request for bids and appoint a new committee for selecting a police psychologist, with greater outreach.

?I?m using this mistake to consult with the feds on best practices,? Adams said. ?I want to figure out what the best way forward is.?

Better way to shed water: Lubricated, nanotextured surfaces boost performance of condensers in power and desalination plants

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Condensers are a crucial part of today's power generation systems: About 80 percent of all the world's powerplants use them to turn steam back to water after it comes out of the turbines that turn generators. They are also a key element in desalination plants, a fast-growing contributor to the world's supply of fresh water. Now, a new surface architecture designed by researchers at MIT holds the promise of significantly boosting the performance of such condensers.

The research is described in a paper just published online in the journal ACS Nano by MIT postdoc Sushant Anand; Kripa Varanasi, the Doherty Associate Professor of Ocean Utilization; and graduate student Adam Paxson, postdoc Rajeev Dhiman and research affiliate Dave Smith, all of Varanasi's research group at MIT.

The key to the improved hydrophobic (water-shedding) surface is a combination of microscopic patterning -- a surface covered with tiny bumps or posts just 10 micrometers (millionths of a meter) across, about the size of a red blood cell -- and a coating of a lubricant, such as oil. The tiny spaces between the posts hold the oil in place through capillary action, the researchers found.

The team discovered that droplets of water condensing on this surface moved 10,000 times faster than on surfaces with just the hydrophobic patterning. The speed of this droplet motion is key to allowing the droplets to fall from the surface so that new ones can form, increasing the efficiency of heat transfer in a powerplant condenser, or the rate of water production in a desalination plant.

With this new treatment, "drops can glide on the surface," Varanasi says, floating like pucks on an air-hockey table and looking like hovering UFOs -- a behavior Varanasi says he has never seen in more than a decade of work on hydrophobic surfaces. "These are just crazy velocities."

The amount of lubricant required is minimal: It forms a thin coating, and is securely pinned in place by the posts. Any lubricant that is lost is easily replaced from a small reservoir at the edge of the surface. The lubricant can be designed to have such low vapor pressure that, Varanasi says, "You can even put it in a vacuum, and it won't evaporate."

Another advantage of the new system is that it doesn't depend on any particular configuration of the tiny textures on the surface, as long as they have about the right dimensions. "It can be manufactured easily," Varanasi says. After the surface is textured, the material can be mechanically dipped in the lubricant and pulled out; most of the lubricant simply drains off, and "only the liquid in the cavities is held in by capillary forces," Anand says. Because the coating is so thin, he says, it only takes about a quarter- to a half-teaspoon of lubricant to coat a square yard of the material. The lubricant can also protect the underlying metal surface from corrosion.

Varanasi plans further research to quantify exactly how much improvement is possible by using the new technique in powerplants. Because steam-powered turbines are ubiquitous in the world's fossil-fuel powerplants, he says, "even if it saves 1 percent, that's huge" in its potential impact on global emissions of greenhouse gases.

The new approach works with a wide variety of surface textures and lubricants, the researchers say; they plan to focus ongoing research on finding optimal combinations for cost and durability. "There's a lot of science in how you design these liquids and textures," Varanasi says.

Daniel Beysens, research director of the Physics and Mechanics of Heterogeneous Media Laboratory at ESPCI in Paris, says the concept behind using a lubricant liquid trapped by a nanopatterned surface, is "simple and beautiful. The drops will nucleate and then slide down quite easily. And it works!"

That further research will be aided by a new technique Varanasi has developed in collaboration with researchers including Konrad Rykaczewski, an MIT research scientist currently based at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersberg, Md., along with John Henry Scott and Marlon Walker of NIST and Trevan Landin of FEI Company. That technique is described in a separate paper also just published in ACS Nano.

For the first time, this new technique obtains direct, detailed images of the interface between a surface and a liquid, such as droplets that condense on it. Normally, that interface -- the key to understanding wetting and water-shedding processes -- is hidden from view by the droplets themselves, Varanasi explains, so most analysis has relied on computer modeling. In the new process, droplets are rapidly frozen in place on the surface, sliced in cross-section with an ion beam, and then imaged using a scanning electron microscope.

"The method relies on preserving the geometry of the samples through rapid freezing in liquid-nitrogen slush at minus 210 degrees Celsius [minus 346 degrees Fahrenheit]," Rykaczewski says. "The freezing rate is so fast (about 20,000 degrees Celsius per second) that water and other liquids do not crystalize, and their geometry is preserved."

The technique could be used to study many different interactions between liquids or gases and solid surfaces, Varanasi says. "It's a completely new technique. For the first time, we're able to see these details of these surfaces."

The enhanced condensation research received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Masdar-MIT Energy Initiative program, and the MIT Deshpande Center. The direct imaging research used NIST facilities, with funding from an NSF grant and the Dupont-MIT Alliance.

The Rise And Fall Of Google's Golden Age

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Introduction

Google's (GOOG) recent earnings release shocked market participants and sent both institutional and retail investors into overdrive seeking answers to the question: Is Google's golden age of growth slowing down? A few short days before the disastrous news Google had leaped over rival Microsoft (MSFT) to grab the number 3 spot of the world's leading corporations by market capitalization, trailing only Apple (AAPL) and Exxon Mobil (XOM).

Companies that introduce game changing technology that leads to market domination have historically had to deal with the "What have you done lately?" question. Google transformed Internet search and the subsequent advertising revenue has been propelling the stock price ever upward. But the game is changing as mobile devices are supplanting desktops/notebooks as the point of origin for searching, and fellow tech giants Microsoft and Amazon are falling all over themselves to mimic the current champion of tech, Apple.

In this article, we look at the probability of Google maintaining its golden edge from two perspectives - its core advertising business and its foray into growth opportunities.

Core Business

Facts and figures are not needed to reach a common sense truth - smaller screens mean less space for ads and therefore decreasing revenue. Google has always been a bit of an anomaly. Despite its impressive list of technological innovations, GOOG is essentially an advertising company. Again, you don't need to be a Certified Financial Analyst to realize Internet access is going mobile at a dizzying pace.

Put the two together and how much trouble does that spell for Google going forward? For Fiscal Year 2011, Google derived 51.5% of its revenue from PC Search Ads and only 6.19% from Mobile Search Ads. By 2019, Mobile Search Ads will grow to 37.1% of total revenue while PC Search Ads will decline to 23.2%.

However, Google is still expected to dominate the expanding mobile search category, according to eMarketer, a digital media statistical analysis firm. Here is what they see for mobile ad revenue growth through 2014:

The potential problem for Google is not total revenue but the price per click that GOOG can charge in its heretofore insanely lucrative business model. In short, Google's total volume may be increasing, but its cumulative paid clicks are heading the other direction, as you can see from the following chart from Business Insider:

Google's net advertising volumes will compensate for declining revenue per ad, but it is doubtful the numbers will be sufficiently high for Google to continue to "lay golden eggs." As the eMarketer chart above indicates, there is growing competition in that space and in a world where tech breakthroughs can surprise, who knows what the future will bring. To avoid the fate of many dominant companies who slip into somnolence, Google needs new growth opportunities.

Growth Opportunities

Google recognized the growth potential of mobile devices when it introduced the Android operating system for smartphones and later extended its use to the exploding tablet market. Android mobile devices have garnered impressive market share. For further growth, both Google and Microsoft are going after Apple by creating their own computing and entertainment ecosystems.

The genius of the Apple ecosystem is the bringing together of hardware, software, and content in a synchronized environment where services and apps remain in the "cloud," enabling the creation of faster and lighter devices. Apple has amassed its stunning record of success because their products both hard and soft are easy to use and reliable, largely because they own and operate every piece of the ecosystem.

Google is rushing into the fray with its own attempts at a true ecosystem, and they have the cash on hand to withstand repeated attempts at cracking Apple's dominance if need be. As of the most recent quarter, Google has $45.7 billion cash compared with $27.6 billion at Apple.

Google has the software and services pieces in place, but haa largely left the hardware to network partners like Samsung. Android phones now surpass iPhones in market share spread across several manufacturers and Android tablets are gaining. In stark contrast to Apple's closed system or "walled garden," Google's Android is open source, and Google generates no direct revenues from Android sales. The company benefits from mobile advertising.

Developers love the freedom of open source projects, but the end result is often products that are less reliable than counterparts totally controlled by Apple. In the summer of 2012 Google introduced its revamped Android Market store with the new and improved Google Play moniker. Google Play has over 600,000 apps along with movies, TV shows, and books to compete with Apple iTunes.

Google also introduced its latest Android Operating System - Jelly Bean - which has a faster interface, offline voice activated typing, and voice search. Other new entrants in Google's ecosystem include the Nexus Q and Google Glass.

The final two could lead to a pathway for Google to return to glory. Google Glass is a head-mounted display with the capability of a Smartphone. It is still under development with a possible release to the consumer market in 2014. The Nexus Q is a media player that will allow users to stream media from Google Play directly on their televisions. For investors, what is significant about the Nexus Q is not what it can do as much as who will make it. According to the Washington Post, the device is to be manufactured here in the U.S. by Google itself, although cloaked in a veil of secrecy, with the product release date delayed.

The Nexus Q represents Google's first attempt at building its own hardware. Google has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in innovation, and the game-changing potential of hands-free operation of a head mounted frame that acts like a smartphone is the latest evidence. For Google to compete with Apple on a grand scale, the company needs to follow Microsoft's lead and move into the hardware device space.

Microsoft is about to release its Surface tablet computer, which has features like a flip stand and a keyboard built-in, unlike the iPad, where these are only available as accessories. The Microsoft Xbox/Kinect is another hardware device owned and operated by Microsoft.

Google needs to follow suit and the company has the means to do it through Motorola Mobility. Google has as yet to do much with this expensive acquisition but the potential is there to expand the manufacture of Smartphones and tablets and move the production of the Chromebook to Motorola. This could give Google the reliability advantage that comes from control of both hardware and software while maintaining the consumer choice advantage through network partners like Samsung, HTC, LG and others.

Google has a major press event coming up on October 29, 2012. While the announcements are expected to center around Android phones and tablet updates and a possible larger Android tablet, watch for any hints of the company's plans for Motorola Mobility.

Disabled patients to benefit from Medicare change

(AP) ? Thousands of Medicare patients with severe chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer's would get continuing access to rehab and other services under a change agreed to by the Obama administration, advocates said Tuesday.

The proposed agreement in a national class action suit would allow Medicare patients to keep receiving physical and occupational therapy and other skilled services at home or in a nursing home so they can remain stable, said Gill Deford, a lawyer with the Center for Medicare Advocacy.

That's been a problem for some because of a longstanding Medicare policy that says patients must show improvement to keep getting rehab. Deford's group and other organizations representing patients challenged it.

"If you have a chronic condition, by definition you are not improving," said Deford, the lead attorney on the case. "Our view is that Medicare regulations were intended to allow people to maintain their health status. They don't have to show they are getting any better. The point is to allow them not to get any worse, if possible."

The agreement was filed with Chief Judge Christina Reiss of the U.S. District Court in Vermont. It is expected to affect tens of thousands ? maybe hundreds of thousands ? of patients nationally. Those who stand to benefit include not only people with intractable conditions like Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and chronic lung disease. Those who are growing weaker because of advancing age, placing them at greater risk of falls and other problems, could also be helped.

The impact on Medicare's budget is unclear, partly because program rules are not always rigidly enforced. Even with a requirement that patients must continue to show improvement, billing contractors sometimes defer to the clinical judgment of doctors and therapists. A patient's underlying disease may be advancing, but therapy might help them keep up strength up and do more to take care of themselves. Still, that's no guarantee that Medicare will pay.

"That's what the point of this case is," said Deford, adding that his center has represented many people repeatedly denied coverage for rehabilitation services. "This will allow them to have access." Advocates say Medicare could break even financially, if patients don't have to go to the hospital.

In court papers, Medicare denied that it imposes an inflexible standard that patients must continue to improve to keep receiving rehab services. Indeed, there is no such requirement in law. Medicare said other factors come into play, such as the patient's medical condition and whether treatment is reasonable and necessary. Government lawyers called the policy change a clarification.

"This settlement clarifies existing Medicare policy," said Erin Shields Britt, a spokeswoman for the federal Health and Human Services department. "We expect no changes in access to services or costs."

Nonetheless, the Medicare policy manual will be changed to spell out that coverage of rehabilitation services "does not turn on the presence or absence of a beneficiary's potential for improvement from the therapy, but rather on the beneficiary's need for skilled care," according to the proposed settlement.

Deford said it could be several months before the settlement is finalized in court, and perhaps another year before Medicare formally completes the policy change. But patients may start seeing a change sooner.

"I'm hoping the new coverage rules will de facto take effect before they are formally revised," said Deford.

Most of the immediate beneficiaries will be the parents of the baby boom generation and younger disabled people, who are also entitled to Medicare coverage. But the change could have its greatest significance for the boomers, many of whom are expected to try to live independently into their 80s and 90s.

The Medicare change was first reported by The New York Times.

Getting a Temporary Auto Insurance for a Short Term a Real - SBWire

Dublin, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/22/2012 -- Vehicle owners who already have a coverage which is not enough for them may get a temporary auto insurance to secure more protection for themselves and their families. Nowadays there could be companies that specialize in providing such kinds of car insurance solutions and buyers who intend to get fully insured can obtain coverage on a short term basis. The main objective of getting a temporary or short term cover for vehicles is that it fills the gap during situations which otherwise do not warrant full coverage for a vehicle. Such type of a car insurance proposition could be best for those thinking of enjoying vacations on rentals.

Typically, people who may be planning to go for a vacation may get a temporary short term car insurance policy which will accord them protection while driving a rented vehicle along unfamiliar terrains when on vacations. The role of such type of an auto insurance coverage could be very specific and by securing it, in case of an accident, buyer would not be required to take any personal liability for the vehicle which is got on rent as well as the other car?s driver. Thus, the term of the insurance will insure the person who seeks such coverage during the entire course of his vacation.

Persons Who Need Temporary Car Insurance Can Request More Information on loan qualification by visiting Freeinsurancequotation.

Besides, one could even get the duration of a temporary auto insurance extended instead of going for an altogether new policy. Alternatively, such a proposal could even prove to be helpful when someone is considering buying a brand new car. Some people may take time to search a good insurance cover for their new vehicles, such individuals can think of getting a temporary insurance policy until they select a proper solution. Hearing shows captain to blame for Italy ship disaster: prosecutor

GROSSETO, Italy (Reuters) - A pre-trial hearing in Italy this week on the sinking of the Costa Concordia cruise ship that cost 32 lives has put the responsibility for the disaster squarely on the shoulders of Captain Francesco Schettino, prosecutors said on Friday.

Schettino is accused of manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship before the evacuation of more than 4,000 passengers and crew was complete. He has admitted making mistakes but says he should not be the only person blamed.

"The pre-trial hearing has confirmed the responsibilities that we identified, above all with regards to Schettino," chief prosecutor Francesco Verusio said on the last day of the closed-door hearing in Grosseto, referring to the accusations leveled against the captain.

While accepting blame for causing the 114,500-tonne Concordia to crash into rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio on January 13, Schettino argues he managed to prevent a worse disaster by steering into shallow water after the impact.

He also says management at the ship's owner Costa Cruises, a unit of Miami-based Carnival Corp, knew its ships regularly came in close to the island to "salute" senior officials on land - the maneuver that led to the crash.

The company has rejected the accusations and also denied suggestions made during the hearing that generator equipment was faulty or that it had been responsible for delays in informing authorities on shore of the accident.

Verusio said the hearing had also shown that the damaged ship's move into safer shallow waters was not due to any action on the captain's part but was down to "God's will".

Schettino's lawyer Bruno Leporatti said on Friday that the court hearing had gone "better than we had expected and from where we started off".

For example, he said, it was significant that the role of an Indonesian helmsman was being investigated.

The defense team says the helmsman misunderstood orders given by Schettino to avoid the rocks off Giglio island. They said earlier this week that an expert report showed the captain's orders may not have been carried out correctly and, had they been, the accident may have been avoided.

Schettino, who appeared more tense on Friday than earlier in the week, said he was not scared that he might go to prison.

"I am only scared that the truth will not come out," he told reporters.

Costa Cruises said in a statement that it had been recognized during the hearing as a company that "implements exhaustive procedures that comply with national and international provisions".

Following the pre-trial hearing, a judge will now decide if there is enough evidence to warrant a trial. Prosecutors said on Friday they hoped to wrap up their investigations by the end of this year.
