ALBANY - A frequent critic of Albany police has reversed course, backing the cops' decision to investigate themselves in the shooting death of Nahcream Moore.
In her own words Friday, Dr. Alice Green and the Center For Law and Justice has spent almost 30 years addressing what she calls law enforcement excesses regarding people of color in the area, but in the police shooting death of 19-year-old Nahcream Moore, green is urging patience.
After battling Albany police and city leaders for more accountability since the early 1980's, Green says there has been a significant change in the last two years with Chief Steven Krokoff and community policing.
?I think that the partnership has been a really meaningful one,? said Green.
Green and two other community representatives say they do not want the progress of the last two years lost in the angry reaction to the shooting of Moore?
Police and District Attorney David Soares are conducting investigations, trying to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.
While in the past Green would lead protests demanding openness and outside monitoring, after improvements in the last couple of years, Green is speaking forcefully for calm to allow police to do their jobs.?
?The police department and the district attorney's office can carry out satisfactory investigations of this matter,? said Green.
Clearly part of the reason for Green's changed attitude is the presence of Working Families Party District Attorney David Soares.
?We are reviewing footage, speaking with witnesses and we should, we should be able to have a response from the grand jury in the not too distant future,? said Soares.
Green says once the police and district attorney investigations are completed their findings will be examined closely to make sure they are thorough and complete.
She acknowledged it could be possible the reports could fairly determine police were within the rights, we will just have to see.
