MERGER MONEY: United Continental Holdings Inc. spent $517 million on merger-related expenses last year, including $170 million in the fourth quarter. The company said it expects that spending to continue at roughly the same rate through at least the first half of this year.
BY THE NUMBERS: The spending to integrate United and Continental airlines was a big factor in its $138 million fourth-quarter loss. A year ago it lost $325 million, also driven by merger expenses.
WHAT'S NEXT: In March the airline plans to combine frequent-flier programs and, in a massive technical undertaking, switch to a single computer system for reservations and customer information.
