Every Student in L.A. Schools Getting an Apple iPad

The Board of Education of the Los Angeles Unified School District has voted to purchase an Apple iPad for every student in the district.

Apple iPadIt will cost $30 million to bring the tablets to 47 schools, with each unit going for $678. That's above the usual price, but the devices will be pre-loaded with additional educational software.

The Apple iPad was chosen because it was the least expensive option that met the Board's requirements, while also being the highest-quality device tested. It "received the highest scoring by the students and the teachers," according to Deputy Superintendent Jaime Aquino.

The plan is not without its detractors. One board member wanted high school students to get laptops instead of tablets.

Before yesterday's vote, Microsoft urged the Board members to not standardize on one tablet but use a variety, including devices running Windows, as this is is the operating system they are most likely to use in the workplace. This was not approved because it would require students who change schools within the district to have to learn to use a new type of tablet.
