EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? Edmundo Juarez scored twice to lead Fall River Sports to a 4-0 win over a short-handed East Providence Sports in Sunday?s regular season finale?at Riverside Recreation Park.
Juarez, who scored in the 15th and 30th minutes, led the way while Lester Ramirez and Chris Arruda scored in the 26th and 28th minutes, respectively. Goalkeeper Nathan Avelar stopped a point blank shot by?Jimmy Hernandez to preserve the clean sheet.
East Providence, which fielded only nine players, had its hands full against Fall River, who claimed their first league title since 1999 on Wednesday.
Although East Providence keeper Jimmi Underhill made a pair of heady saves to?stave off?the attack, it wasn?t long before Fall River was able to exploit?their short-handed opponent. In the 15th minute, Juarez converted a pass from?Ramirez to put his squad on the scoreboard.
Ramirez joined Juarez on the sheet 11 minutes later when he tapped it through an open net in the 26th minute.
Two minutes later, Ramirez resumed his playmaking role when he crossed it into the area for Arruda, who stuffed it onto the back of the net in the 28th minute.
Juarez capped the scoring at the half hour mark when he slotted through his second goal of the game past a helpless Underhill.
East Providence?s only serious threat came in the 40th minute when Hernandez went into the area and fired a hard shot on Avelar. But the keeper denied the effort right on his line. Hernandez, who suffered a broken left ankle last month,?played valiantly despite an original four-month recovery prognosis.
With the league championship already determined and East Providence?s personnel withering, the squads agreed to end the game at halftime.
Fall River finishes the season with a 15-2-2 (47 points) record, while East Providence ends their campaign with an 11-4-4 ?(37 points) record.
Although the regular season wrapped up on Sunday, both clubs resume action next weekend with LUSA Cup competition. Fall River will host a first round tie with Taunton Eagles at 7pm on Saturday at Billy Goncalves Field. East Providence kicks off its Cup schedule at 11am on Sunday when they host Lindo?s ST at Riverside Recreation Park.
