A recent article on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reassessing the use of portable electronic devices on planes brought forth a number of comments on whether or not it's a good idea to let people make cell phone calls at 30,000 feet.
But such a future may not be all that far off. Recently, Virgin Atlantic announced plans to begin offering its air passengers the ability to make and receive calls in the air.

But safety issues aside, what is the etiquette of talking on a cell phone during the flight?
"I am a big fan of NOT having to listen to the conversations of other people during flights. We all get enough of that when our feet are on the ground and we can get away from the conversation. It?s ok to have quiet time without electronic gadgets going," wrote one Mashable reader.

But is this about technology, or about inconsiderate travelers? Perhaps flight attendants don't want to be called in to referee an argument when a passenger trying to sleep asks a guy on a call to pipe down.
A friend of mine posted on Facebook this past weekend that he just returned from a long flight back to the US from Europe. He complained that two women behind him talked, sometimes loudly, the entire time. They never slept, even though he was trying to. His question: Was there anything he could have said or done that would not have been considered rude or overstepping their rights, while preserving his own?
Many people responded that he could have asked a flight attendant to intervene, but others said they have a right to talk on a plane. If they had been on a cell phone, of course, then it seemed fairly obvious that the behavior would have been deemed 'inconsiderate' and someone could have been asked to step in.
What do you think? Is it ok to ask someone to speak softly on a plane, or are those requests only allowed when we're dealing with electronics?
